After reposting a TikTok video on Instagram about why some relationships end, Valerie Bertinelli wanted to explain more as many wondered about her DMs.

“I seem to have started a bit of a storm in my DMs with my previous Story, so let me try to clarify a few things,” he began his explanation. “If I post something and it doesn’t resonate with you, that means it’s not for you. Don’t pay attention. Don’t take it personally, it’s not for you.”

The reposted video states, “A man usually leaves one woman for another woman. But a woman leaves a man for herself.” Bertinelli, 62, wanted to clarify some things about mental and emotional abuse. “What he said in the post, usually, but not always, not always, a man will leave a relationship for a woman other. And usually, but not always, a woman has to go to find herself,” she said. “When it comes to emotional abuse and mental abuse, it’s not talked about because people just think I’m not physically abused so it’s not abuse, right?”

He goes on to explain how sometimes a person loses themselves trying to make their partner feel loved and, in the process, they have lost the love and respect they have for themselves. “So, he will go, or he will go, to find themselves again, to love themselves again, because they don’t know who they are,” he explained. Everything feels so confused, you think you’re crazy, so you just have to be healthy.”

Bertinelli wants his followers to know that if his posts don’t resonate with them, that’s okay because they don’t have to be for you. He said he noticed there was a large community of people his posts resonated with and those are the people he hopes to reach.

Many of the Food Network star’s followers can relate to his content and comment on explanatory posts. “You’re right. Nothing is absolute. However, I think this is more true than not. I also feel you don’t need to explain yourself but thanks for being genuine. People will always have something to complain about or argue about,” one follower wrote.

“I believe that’s why dating is so important, red flags will come up sooner than others, when you truly understand what it means to love yourself, nothing anyone can say, or do can take that away from you, unless you give it to them. ! Nice post,” added another.

One follower explained how this content got so popular saying, “Thank you Valerie. Facing something very personal and painful similar to what you share. My goal is to get through it literally one day at a time… ❤️‍?”

Many other followers have been through emotional or mental abuse and want to thank Bertinelli for his candid conversations because they are not often talked about. “Wow this post resonates with me too much. After getting myself out of a 30+ year relationship and healing from emotional and mental abuse. Physical scars heal but healing from emotional and mental abuse takes longer to heal and scars are something no one can see – only you feel them,” shared one.

On January 5, Bertinelli posted a video talking about his decision to have a dry January. “I have decided to go in January,” he said. “I like it so far.” He explained that he decided to do this after being pushed by a friend, and because he wanted to reduce sugar cravings and “calm down the cortisol in my body that has been raging for the last five, six years.”

Bertinelli said he’s been drinking less for the past six or seven months, so it’s more about cutting out sugar and resetting his erratic nervous system. She’s clearly not alone in trying out a dry January as many of her social media followers jumped into the comments to talk about their thoughts and experiences about it.

“I quit sugar 4 years ago and I am calm and the anger I have has decreased drastically. Don’t get me wrong, I have a cheat day once a month, or no sugar and it’s been a game changer for me. I never wanted to be the person I was all this time. It caused some kind of balance in my brain,” shared one follower.

“Thanks for sharing. I DJed 3 years ago and never went back. Alcohol is one of the top 3 inflammatory substances we can ingest. Quitting has calmed my IBS and I’ve lost 40 pounds. Wish I quit drinking in 10 more years early,” added another.
