The teenage driver accused of running down a retired police chief in a fatal hit-and-run has told Las Vegas police he will be back on the streets in less than a month, according to a report.
Jesus Ayala is accused of driving a stolen Hyundai Elantra on August 14 along with Jzamir Keys, 16, and intentionally crashing into and killing Andreas “Andy” Probst, 64, who had been riding his bicycle, a disturbing video shows.
Ayala, who had just turned 18, was arrested hours after Probst was killed and told police while in custody that he would not be locked up for long.
“You think this teenager [expletive] will do some [expletive]? I’ll be out in 30 days, I’ll bet you,” Ayala told police, according to KLAS.
“Just ah, [expletive] ah, hit and run — slap on the wrist.”
Police have not notified Ayala of any hit-and-run charges, and he was only arrested for a warrant and obstructing a peace officer, the outlet reported.
Ayala is being held at the Clark County Detention Center without bail and faces 18 charges including murder, attempted murder and grand larceny.

Ayala and Keys made their first appearance Thursday in Las Vegas Justice Court, where the teenagers face charges as adults.
In their brief and separate appearances, the two teenagers did not speak and were not asked to make a confession.
The two cases are being handled separately because of the timing of their arrests — Keys was arrested on Tuesday.
“Both of these defendants will be charged with open murder, attempted murder, and many other related charges,” Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson told reporters outside court.

Prosecutors also asked for high bail pending trial before Wolfson called the two men a danger to the community.
“The events in this case are related,” he said. “I am very confident that these cases will be consolidated.”
Keys, who faces three charges, was arrested after she was caught on camera fighting last week.

Probst was thrown onto the hood of the vehicle and left for dead.
His widow, Crystal Probst, and daughter, Taylor Probst, were in court for Thursday’s hearing but left immediately afterward without speaking to reporters.
Taylor Probst said Tuesday the attack was a senseless killing caused by the effect of “social media on our youth” — not because of her father’s 35 years in law enforcement.
The mothers of the two teenagers both spoke about their son’s heinous actions but they did not share the same view.
“I don’t know why he did this,” Ayala’s mother told KLAS Wednesday. “I don’t know if God can forgive this.”

“My son’s side of the story will be told, the ‘truth’, not the inaccuracies the media will try to portray,” Keys’ mother said in a text to the station.
The death penalty will not be sought in either case because under Nevada law, they face 20 years to life in prison if they are convicted before they turn 18.

They then apparently stole two more cars before crashing it.
A stolen Hyundai Elantra was found abandoned in a ditch with blood on the windshield, 10 minutes from where Probst was hit.
