A California police officer punched a suspected shoplifter in the head while arresting her for allegedly stealing $2,000 worth of merchandise from a mall, according to a video that has gone viral.
The 50-second video, which has more than 780,000 views on TikTok, opens with the end of a car chase in Vallejo on Friday, when officers tried to arrest the suspect, who allegedly shoplifted with an accomplice from the Gateway Plaza mall.
The officer walked up to the driver, who was not identified, and pulled him out of the car while confronting him. The officer then threw her against the car before grabbing her by the hair and throwing her to the ground.
As the woman appeared to resist as she lay on the ground, the arresting officer could be seen punching her in the head, with police saying it was necessary to get her to comply.

The officer then restrained the woman with his knees as she tried to squirm, and he was able to place handcuffs on her when other officers arrived on the scene.
Vallejo police said the incident began after a loss prevention officer waved down officers and told them about two people who had stolen items from the shopping plaza, KTVU reported.
Police were able to locate the suspect based on the loss prevention officer’s testimony, but when they initially tried to arrest the driver, he allegedly resisted and drove away.
The car chase didn’t last long when the suspect ran a red light and collided with two vehicles, including a cement truck and an SUV carrying a mother and her two 4-year-old sons, police said.

While the mother was reportedly injured, the two boys were not injured in the accident.
As the officer arrested the driver, his accomplice fled the scene. The fleeing woman was eventually stopped by a passerby.
Vallejo police said they recovered $2,000 worth of merchandise from the car. Officials added that the two appear to be the same pair of suspects who stole about $1,000 worth of merchandise from a store on September 26.

Records show the driver was already on felony probation for grand theft and shoplifting and was previously arrested Oct. 4 for stealing $30,000 worth of products from another business, police said.
His accomplice, also unidentified, had a $10,000 warrant for his arrest in San Mateo for burglary and a $50,000 warrant in Napa for grand theft.
Officials said both women were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The arrest is currently under review by the Vallejo Police Department under their use of force policy.
