A Florida man wanted by police tried to throw them off his trail by placing a large sign outside his home, reading: “Johnny Yates DOES NOT live here!!”
It didn’t work.
Yates, 41, who was wanted by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office on aggravated assault, false imprisonment and harassment charges, was eventually locked up.
Deputies attended Yates’ Lakeland home at about 2:45 p.m. Saturday after receiving a tip that he was hiding inside, the sheriff’s office said on Facebook.
“When deputies arrived, they saw a note written on a dry erase board in front of the window that said, ‘Johnny Yates does NOT live here!!'” the post said. “Wow…the dry erase board has never lied to us before—should we believe it?”
The deputy questioned someone who left the home, who confirmed that Yates was inside — but after circling the home for an hour and calling the escapee out, police had to take it to the next level, the office said.

“Enough was enough, and ‘Surrender Smoke’ was released in the house, and four people came out of the house, but there was no Johnny,” the sheriff’s office said.
“The deputies called for more, but still no answer from Johnny, so a second helping of ‘Surrender Smoke’ was brought into the house to wander around a bit.”
“Still, no response from Johnny,” the post said. “Eventually, deputies and K-9 Dexter entered the home and located Johnny, who was hiding in a makeshift drawer.
“Johnny was arrested and taken to jail.”
The office said four people who initially hid in the house with Yates were also dealt with.
“As for the four people who didn’t cooperate with the deputies, each received a parting gift: resisting charges and an all-expense paid trip to Grady Judd’s Bed & Breakfast.”
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, that is.
