The clip begins with the rapper saying he hopes he doesn’t get in trouble for sharing his views on school.

“I think we’ve gotten so caught up in school as a tradition, that we’ve stopped using it as a learning tool, which it should be,” he said. “To this day, I mean, schools should, I think there should be a different curriculum in every neighborhood, you know?”

He explained that he learned the basics in his high school, but that was not a foundation for him and did not prepare children for today’s world.

“That’s why the streets have taught me and, but school is very important. Read, write, count, but I think after you learn to read, write, count, that’s it,” he continued. “But what they tend to do is teach you to read, write, count, then teach you to read, write, count again. Then again. Then again, just make it harder and harder just to keep you busy, and at that’s where I think they screwed up.”

Tupac said he felt there should be classes on drugs, sex education, real sex education classes, “not just pictures and diagrams and illogical terms and things like that.”

If Tupac had his own school, it would have an eclectic array of classes to teach kids real life skills.

“There needs to be a class on fraud. There should be a class on religious worship. There should be a class on police brutality. There should be a class on apartheid. There should be a class on racism in America. There should be a class on why people are hungry, but there isn’t,” he explained.

“There are gym classes, physical education. Let’s learn volleyball, because one day you will know. There are classes like algebra, where I still haven’t gone to the store and said, ‘Can I get X, Y, plus 2. And get my Y exchange back.’

Tupac went on to explain that at the age of 17, he was already living on his own and it wasn’t what he learned in school that helped him. He praises his mother and walks, as well as reading.

He goes on to reiterate that reading, writing and arithmetic are important and he learns from them, but that’s it. He said a foreign language should not be required, although he felt it was important.

“Actually, they should teach you English, and then teach you how to understand the double talk, the double talk of politicians,” he continued. “Not teaching you how to understand French, and Spanish, and German. When will I go to Germany? I can’t afford to pay my rent in America, how do I go to Germany?”

He concluded his educational talk by saying, “This is what I mean by foundation, and it is not foundation for me.” He also stated that elementary and high school should be like college where you take the classes you want “to choose your path.”

Viewers of Tyler’s Express TikTok video jumped into the comments to discuss the late rapper’s thoughts on the education system.

“Now there’s a class at a top University with Tupac Shakur!!!! Harvard has a class at Pac,” shared one. Another added, “This wisdom still applies today. I totally agree with him.”

A Spanish teacher also agreed with his thought process. “As a Spanish teacher I agree. You don’t have to come to my class, you should come to my class because you want to learn the language.” Another teacher added, “I’m a teacher and I totally agree! ?”

Another pointed out, “7 years after someone receives their Master’s degree, if you RE-TEST them on everything they took to get their degree, the vast majority will fail!”

One viewer said, “Imagine how much better society would be now if we held classes on cults, double talk and fraud. ?”
