Dramatic video shot in British Columbia, Canada shows a swirling spray of water swirling across the water while a massive forest fire scorches the landscape in the background.
According to the FOX Forecast Center, cold weather hit the Lillooet, Canada area last week, following several days of hot and dry weather.
The waterspout was filmed in the early hours of August 18 in the Gun Lake area by firefighters working on the Downton Lake fire.
With the intense heat from the wildfires as an additional component to the cold front’s lift, winds in the atmosphere begin to swirl and lead to the development of the waterspout.
The The British Columbia Wildfire Service describes the phenomenon on Xformerly known as Twitter, as a whirlwind.
A fire tornado is a swirl of smoke and flame that forms when intense heat and turbulent winds combine, creating a rotating column of fire that resembles a tornado.
But based on additional analysis, the FOX Prediction Center instead believes the spinner is a water bulge.

“The video seems to suggest that smoke/gas and water are swirling as the base of the vortex, but there appears to be more water than smoke,” said FOX Weather senior meteorologist Jordan Overton. “It is likely that this was caused by a tornado on the coast and then moving over the water. This may be due to extreme temperature differences driven by wildfires.”
Overton continued that there is little evidence in the video that shows actual flames being lifted into the vortex, which increases the confidence that this is actually a tornado or a waterspout rather than a fire vortex.
“It’s very possible (and likely) that this is a real fire vortex in its early stages,” Overton said. “But further examination of the video itself at that time will show that what we see in the video is a water tornado with a mixture of smoke and gas.”

What is a waterspout?
Fair weather water jets are those that grow over open water and form at the surface of the water and rise upward along with the warm water and high humidity in the lower atmosphere.
These types of waterspouts are generally simpler and less dangerous than tornadic waterspouts.
Tornadoes usually start as true tornadoes that are spawned by thunderstorms over land and move out over open water.

Forest fires scorched Canada for months
Massive wildfires have been raging across Canada for months, and have so far burned more than 13 million hectares (32 million acres), according to Canada’s National Wildfire Situation Report.
Wildfires burning in Canada have also caused unhealthy air quality levels in the US for days, including in June when places like New York City experienced the worst air quality on record.
