Madonna Thanks Pepsi For Finally Recognizing The Genius Behind THIS Video
In 1989, Pepsi reached a $5 million (£4 million) deal with Madonna to use her song “Like A Prayer” in a TV commercial for the brand. However, a day after the ad debuted, he released the official music video for the song, which sparked the aforementioned widespread outrage.
As a result, Pepsi quickly pulled the ad from the airwaves. Now, to commemorate the company’s 125th anniversary, they’ve revived the ad, which aired again during the MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday night.
The Queen of Pop also shared her opinion about the once controversial clip seeing the light of day again. Taking to Instagram, the 65-year-old shared footage showing him holding the can of fizzy drink with one hand as he watched the “Like a Prayer” music video play in front of him. In the caption, he wrote:
“34 years ago I did a commercial with Pepsi to celebrate the release of my song Like a Prayer. The ad was immediately pulled when I refused to change any scenes in the video where I kissed a black saint or burned a cross.”
The “4 Minutes” hitmaker concluded, “Thus began my illustrious career as an artist who refused to compromise the integrity of my art. Thank you @pepsi for finally realizing the greatness of our collaboration. Artists are here to disturb the peace.”
His fans were quick to back him up in the comments section, with one of them pointing out, “The only issue here is that Pepsi is afraid to support you and now see them jump on any trend. YOU baby, set the TREND in CULTURE. The difference that big.”
“Like a Prayer is one of my favorite songs and the video is an amazing statement. I’m glad Pepsi finally got this out. And glad you’re still getting PAID!,” a second viewer offered. A third called Madonna “a woman ahead of her time,” and a fourth said:
“And that’s why I love you so much @madonna You’re not afraid to make unpopular decisions in your career. You always stand up for yourself without giving a F what anyone else thinks. I admire that. You are bad*ss. Love you.”
It’s 40 Years And Counting In Music For The ‘Like A Prayer’ Singer
The “Bloodhounds of Broadway” actor previously celebrated the 40th anniversary of his self-titled debut album. According to The Blast, he marked this impressive feat on Instagram by sharing an adorable video of himself belting out his 1983 hit, “Lucky Star.”
Looking absolutely stunning, the mum-of-six wore an all-black outfit, featuring cargo pants and a mesh T-shirt under a sleeveless bustier top. The breast enhancer features a corset-style bodice with a hook-and-eye back closure that accentuates the performer’s cinched waist.
She completed her look with stylish gold sunglasses, matching gold earrings and a red string tied around her wrist. As for her moves, the pop icon turned her back to the camera, resting her hands on her hips while confidently swaying her hips to the beat.
