Who is Alan Garber, the interim Harvard president replacing Claudine Gay?

Harvard University’s longtime provost will take over as interim president after Claudine Gay resigned Tuesday following weeks of backlash over House’s damning testimony about antisemitism on campus — and multiple accusations of plagiarism in her academic work.

The Harvard Corporation confirmed that physician and economist Alan Garber will replace Gay on an interim basis while the school searches for a new leader.

The organization said a search for a new leader will begin “in the near future” and “will include extensive engagement and consultation with the Harvard community going forward.”

The Post has reached out to Garber for comment.

Gay announced his resignation on Tuesday, writing in a statement: “It is with a heavy heart but with deep love for Harvard that I am writing to share that I will be stepping down as president.

“[I]It has become clear that it is in Harvard’s best interest for me to resign so that our community can weather this moment of extraordinary challenge by focusing on the institution rather than any individual.”

Gay served the shortest tenure in school history, lasting just six months and one day. He was the first black leader of the nation’s most prestigious university.

Garber’s ‘regret’ over Harvard statement on Israel-Hamas war

In November, Garber told the Harvard Crimson that he “regretted” the Ivy League’s earlier statement about the Israel-Hamas war that had caused a bitter divide on campus.

“Our goal is to make sure our community is safe, secure and feels well supported – and that first statement didn’t do that,” he told the school paper.

He said the antisemitism crisis on campus is the most “serious” he has faced since joining Harvard.

“In my view, there is nothing serious for the University like this – I even include Covid in that,” he said.

“Society is immediately divided, and that’s not true for every crisis we face,” he said of the conflict that began after Hamas’s October 7 surprise attack on Israel.

“It’s a combustible situation, and one where a lot of people are sad.”

Harvard also saw initial admissions drop 17%, with nearly 2,000 fewer students applying for a coveted spot at the Ivy League institution this year than last year.
