Upon closer inspection, the photo even showed that the news was published by the NPR website and written by an author named Dustin Jones.
But obviously, the post has been edited. The original news instead had a different headline about the famous kid behind the viral social media song. It reads, “Meet South Dakota’s new corn-bassador, a boy who recently learned that corn is native.”

Corn Kid Tariq was just enjoying his grilled corn in the summer of 2022 when Julian Shapiro-Barnum, host of Recess Therapy, approached him. The YouTuber then asked the little boy what he thought of the corn, and to his delight, Tariq gave a detailed explanation in his beautiful voice of why he liked this “big lump with knobs.”
The adorable footage, which was uploaded on YouTube on August 4, 2022 (which now has over 7 million views), went viral instantly. And the video gained even more attention after The Gregory Brothers turned snippets from the interview into a song.
Thus, “Child of Corn” was born.
After that, Tariq appeared in a television commercial for the Mexican fast food chain Chipotle and also attended the premiere of Pinocchio in Los Angeles. But the best part was when he received the highest honor of South Dakota’s official “corn bassador” by Governor Kristi Noem.
For those who don’t know, South Dakota is one of the top corn producers in the country.
In addition, Tariq was also invited by Drew Barrymore to appear in a food news segment on her show. Recalling the moment Jessica realized her son had gone viral, she shared, “I got a message with a video from Europe and they were like, ‘Isn’t this Tariq?’ They’re like, ‘He’s on TikTok!’ And then I realized that ‘Oh my God, my son is all over the internet.”
So, after bookers from television shows started calling, Tariq’s spouse immediately found a lawyer and let him handle the administrative side.
