Gunman Dylan Butler has endured years of relentless bullying that most recently enveloped his older sister before going on a rampage at his rural Iowa high school Thursday, community members said.
The 17-year-old was armed with a pump-action shotgun, a small-caliber handgun and improvised explosive devices when he opened fire at Perry High School at 7:47 a.m., police said.
Butler killed a sixth-grader and wounded five others, including his principal, before turning the gun on himself.
He had plans to kill more people, however – his body was found with an unexploded improvised explosive device, which police described as “pretty basic.”

The teenager is believed to have acted alone, although his motive remains unclear.
A family who knew Butler described him as a quiet person who had been bullied since elementary school.
Sisters Yesenia Roeder and Khamya Hall, both 17, along with their mother, Alita, told the Associated Press that Butler finally snapped after her younger sister started being cheated on, too.

School officials never intervened, which they said was the “last straw” for Butler.
“He is sick. He is tired. He was tired of the bullying. He is tired of the distraction,” said Yesenia.
“Was it a smart idea to shoot up the school? Nope. God, no.”
He posted a cryptic video to his since-deleted social media moments before the horrific rampage at the small-town campus that houses both a middle school and a high school, 40 miles northwest of Des Moines.

In a TikTok video, Butler posed in a bathroom stall at the school with a blue duffel bag at her feet along with the caption: “now we wait.”
The video is overlaid with the song “Stray Bullet” by rock band KMFDM — which features lyrics like “I’m your nightmare come true, I’m your worst enemy,” and “Stray bullet, from the bin of love.”
It was also famously used on the personal website of Eric Harris, one of the shooters in the 1999 Columbine High School massacre.

Investigators also found another photo posted of Butler posing with a gun, insiders told the Associated Press.
It is unclear whether the firearm used in the riot belonged to Butler.
Starting in July 2021, Iowa will not require a permit to buy a handgun or carry a firearm in public, although it does require a background check for anyone buying a handgun without a permit.
Police have not identified the six Butler victims, but the Easton Valley Community School District confirmed that Dan Marburger, the school’s principal since 1995, was one of the survivors.
“We are heartbroken to hear of this kind of violence that affects so many people, including many in our community. Our thoughts are also with the entire Perry community as they grieve this traumatic event. We will follow up with any updates as soon as we receive more information,” the district said in a statement.
One of the five survivors was in critical condition but the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, police said. The other four victims are stable.
The attack happened on the first day back to classes after winter break, but Butler opened fire before the opening bell when “very few students and faculty” were in the building, Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante said at a news conference after the incident. shooting
