Rapper Goonew’s Funeral Goes Viral
After holding a ‘funeral’ that displayed what appeared to be the embalmed body of rising rapper Goonew who was shot dead during a robbery two weeks earlier, a nightclub has caused an uproar. Fans of rapper Goonew were shocked when cellphone footage from the event was given the nickname Final Showreleased on Sunday night at the club Happy in Washington, DC.
The viral video showed the late rapper dressed in designer clothes and wearing a crown. As reported by the DailyMail, mourners are said to have paid a $40 cover charge to enter the club. Video shows people in the packed venue dancing and singing around the body of the dead rapper.
On Sunday, many mourners gathered at Happy, which touts itself as “the perfect place for a sophisticated night to chill and dance,” to bid farewell to the up-and-coming rapper. The video recorded and shared shows Goonew with his eyes open, a designer Amiri hooded sweatshirt, ripped jeans decorated with fire, and shoes, and accessorized with a gold watch and crown.
People danced and sang as multicolored strobe lights lit up the packed venue. At one point, fireworks were set off right next to Morrow.
Many people commented on Instagram that the show was “weird,” “disturbing” and “disrespectful.” Meanwhile, others defended saying it was what the family wanted. On Monday, Bliss nightclub management released an Instagram message trying to distance itself from the growing controversy surrounding the release.
‘Bliss has been contacted by a local funeral home to rent out our venue for Goonew’s homecoming celebration,’ the message read. ‘Bliss was never made aware of what was about to happen. We apologize to all who may have been offended or offended.
‘Please keep Goonew’s family and friends in your prayers at this difficult time.’
Many people thought it was a wax figure, including the rapper, Black Fortune. Black also performed at the event and confirmed it was Goonew’s real body. Black Fortune wrote on his Instagram Stories: ‘No it’s not a wax figure… Brodie I’m out gansta.’
Rapper Goonew Cause of Death
On March 18, 2021, police confirmed that rapper Goonew was shot and killed in the 3400 block of Walters Lane in the District Heights neighborhood. He was shot in the back during a robbery and the pendant he wore around his neck was stolen. He was rushed to a hospital where he later died, according to police.
A statement released by the police read, “Homicide Unit detectives are working to identify and arrest a suspect who killed a man on Friday in the unincorporated section of District Heights. The victim is 24-year-old Markelle Morrow of Washington, DC. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.”
The exact cause of his death is not clear but it may have been a gunshot wound and complications.
