Pop star Britney Spears spoke at length about her estranged father, Jamie Spears, in her memoir, “The Woman In Me.”
It’s no secret that Britney, 41, has been estranged from her father, 71, for years, as he acted as conservator for most of the controversial thirteen-year conservatorship, which ran from February 2008 to November 2021.

In an excerpt from her memoir, “The Woman In Me,” the Princess of Pop called her father a “cult leader” when she described how the rest of the family never questioned his authority, as per Page Six. He spoke of how he was required to go to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings four times a week during his conservatorship because his father thought he had a “problem” with substance abuse.
After an “exhausting” show during her Las Vegas Residency, Britney said she wanted to skip one of the meetings to spend time with her two sons: Sean Preston, now 18, and Jayden James, 17. “I never watch a movie with the kids I’m at home in Vegas. I thought we could have popcorn and have fun together,” Britney recalled, explaining how Jamie told her, “No, you have to go.”
The “Toxic” singer turned to her mother for support; however, she claims that her mother just “turned her face away”. Britney wrote, “At that time, I started to feel like I was in a cult and my father was the leader of the cult,” adding, “They treated me like I was attached to him.”

The “Overprotected” singer broke down the timeline of events during his conservatorship, which he said consisted of four AA meetings, two hours of therapy, three hours of practice a week, meeting fans and three shows. Britney said that she was “burnt out” by her busy schedule and “wanted to be in control [her] own destiny.”
She also claims that Jamie put her on a strict diet, consisting of only chicken and canned vegetables for two years, to keep her weight down. “Two years is a long time to not be able to eat what you want, especially when your body, your work and your soul make the money that everyone lives on,” he wrote. “Two years of asking for fries and being told no. I find it very humbling.”

In addition to being shamed by the media, he recalled how he also began to be constantly scrutinized by his father during his conservatorship. “If I think being criticized about my body in the press is bad, it hurts more than my own father. He repeatedly told me I looked fat and I needed to do something about it,” she wrote.
“Feeling like you’re never good enough is a soul-crushing situation for a child,” she continued. “He passed that message on to me as a girl, and even after I had accomplished so much, he continued to do so to me.”

In another excerpt from her memoir released by People magazine, the “Girl In The Mirror” singer said she felt like a “shadow” of herself after thinking about how her father and friends controlled her during her conservatorship.
“Thirteen years passed with me feeling like a shadow of myself. I think back now about my father and his friends controlling my body and my money all that time and it makes me sick,” she wrote.

“Think of how many male artists gamble all their money away; how many have substance abuse or mental health problems. No one is trying to take away their control over their bodies and their money,” she continued, adding, “I didn’t deserve what my family did to me.”
He went on to say that he “became” a robot while a conservator, adding, “But not just a robot – a kind of child robot. I’ve become so childish that I’ve lost a piece of what makes me feel like myself. The conservator stripped me of my femininity, made me a child. I became more of an entity than a person on stage. I always felt the music in my bones and blood; they stole that from me.”
Britney Spears’ memoir “The Woman In Me” was officially released on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
