“King Richard” star Will Smith revealed that a co-star on the set of “Emancipation” spat on him while in character. The actor is still somewhat on the sidelines with the public and some celebrities for his actions earlier this year during the Oscars.
During the event, Will took to the stage to slap comedian Chris Rock after he made an ill-advised joke at the expense of his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The resulting fallout saw the studio shut down his film project and fellow celebrities publicly slam the actor for his actions.
Despite issuing multiple apologies, Will recently spoke about “Emancipation,” his latest film, and assured people that it’s completely understandable if they’re still uncomfortable watching it on screen.

Will joins his three children, Trey, Jaden, and Willow Smith, on the latest episode of Facebook Watch’s “Red Table Talk.” During the interview, he talked about his time on the set of “Emancipation,” describing it as very taxing on all fronts. “It’s emotional, it’s physical, it’s spiritually taxing,” the actor said.
Will also mentioned an unnamed actor who apparently liked the character so much that he spat on him, in the face no less, during filming. “One day on set, there was a scene with one of the actors, and he leaned in my face and said, ‘You’re a cold person, aren’t you?’ and then he ad-libbed,” recalls the actor.
During his narration, Will points out spitting on Willow, and the children laugh. The actress continued, “I was like, ‘Makeup!’ No, but it’s like . . . I’m like, whoa, every actor on this set takes it very, very seriously. Will doesn’t name the actor he’s talking about though.

The American historical film features Will as Peter, a man enslaved in the state of Louisiana in 1869, who, after struggling with death, escapes from his plantation. William N. Collage wrote the film with Antoine Fuqua as its director.
“Emancipation” relates to real-life events and is loosely based on the life of a former slave named Gordon, whose photographs showing his badly scarred bare back were circulated in 1863. The photographs were used as evidence to show the cruelty of slavery and fuel the movement elimination at that time.
Apart from Will, Charmaine Bingwa and Ben Foster are also featured in the film. It premiered on October 1 in Washington, and on December 2, it was released to select theaters. “Emancipation” was released on Apple TV+ on December 9. The studio paid $130 million for the rights to the film.
Will Smith Says It’s Fine If People Don’t Watch His New Movie
In a previous interview with Fox 5’s “Good Day DC,” Will revealed that he completely understands people who are too uncomfortable to watch “Emancipation.” In response to the host, Kevin McCarthy, asked him what he would say to people who are uncomfortable.
Will said, “I really understand that if someone’s not ready, I’m really going to respect that and allow them the space they’re not ready. My deepest concern is that my team – [director Antoine Fuqua] has done what I think is the best work of his career.”
The actor admitted that he hopes his actions during the 2022 Oscars do not affect the reception of the film enough to punish the team.
He continued, “I hope the material – the strength of the film, the timeliness of the story – I hope the good it can do will open people’s hearts to at least see and recognize and support the incredible artists in and around this film.”

After the Oscar incident, Will received punishment from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his actions. The actor was barred from all Academy events for a decade and had several ongoing projects shut down during that time.
Will joined Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” in November and revealed that he had a lot of pent-up anger that seemed to explode that night. “I’m gone,” the actor said. “That’s anger that’s been bottled up for a long time.”
Will continued, “It was a terrible night, as you can imagine. There’s a lot of nuance and complexity to it, you know, but at the end of the day, I just – I lost it, and I guess what I’m going to say [is] you never know what someone is going through.”
Although the actor did not specify the exact issue, he revealed that it was “a lot of things.”
