Cheeseheads say “Cheers!” to this bit of beverage legislation in the Badger State.
Wisconsin could become the first state to name an official cocktail, thanks to a bipartisan resolution passed Thursday in the Assembly that declares the region’s drink of choice an old fashioned — but with brandy, not traditional whiskey.
The classic cocktail, which usually contains bitters and sugar, is favored in the Dairyland state with muddled cherries and orange slices, too.
The resolution now heads to the state Senate.
If approved, it will be sent to Governor Tony Evers’ desk for his signature to make it official.
As a resolution, not a bill, it will carry no legal weight and the Legislature can adopt it without a hearing or any public input.

The old style won’t be in the state’s “Blue Book” like other official state symbols, but many are still satisfied.
“There are a thousand things in the state of Wisconsin that make us special, and this is just one of them,” said the resolution’s sponsor, Republican Rep. Jon Plumer, before the vote.
