Wisconsin La Crosse chancellor unanimously fired after filming online porn videos with wife: ‘Abhorrent’

A University of Wisconsin chancellor who previously paid porn stars thousands of dollars to talk to students on campus was canned Wednesday — after it was revealed he recorded his own adult content with his wife and posted the X-rated video online.

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents voted unanimously to fire UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow, citing his “abhorrent” behavior in an uncharacteristic statement.

“In recent days, we learned about specific behavior by Dr. Gow which has caused the university to suffer significant reputational damage. His actions are abhorrent,” UW president Jay Rothman said in a statement.

Gow — La Crosse’s second-longest-serving chancellor — appears in various online porn videos with his wife, Carmen Wilson, using “Happy Sexy Couple” as their public account name.

The films, which sometimes feature famous porn stars, appear on sites like OnlyFans as well as Pornhub.

UW system president of regents Karen Walsh accused Gow, 63, of showing “disregard for the role entrusted to him.”

“We are concerned, and disgusted, by his actions, which are completely and undeniably inconsistent with his role as chancellor,” Walsh added.

A salaried faculty member who has served as chancellor since 2007, Gow will be placed on paid administrative leave when he transitions to his faculty role.

However, Rothman said he filed a complaint Wednesday afternoon with interim Chancellor Betsy Morgan asking that Gow’s status as a tenured faculty member be reviewed.

An outside law firm has been hired “to conduct a full investigation into the matter,” Rothman said.

The former chancellor claimed that even though his face was shown in the video, he never revealed anything to do with his prestigious university position.

“Nothing was said about the University of Wisconsin; nothing was said about the chancellor (in the video),” Gow told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel after the firing.

“So other people have to make the association. And then someone has to say that’s problematic.

He insisted that no school funds were used to create the content, which explores adult sexuality freely and is within his right to free speech under the First Amendment, he said.

Gow also claimed he was not contacted before Wednesday’s meeting and questioned whether the board gave him due process.

Earlier this month, Gow and his wife launched a YouTube cooking channel dubbed “Sexy Healthy Cooking” where they invite adult movie stars to cook vegan food – sometimes ending with Gow and his wife walking off-screen with their guests.

Their X account more clearly directs their followers to view their LoyalFans and OnlyFans sites “for fully explicit scenes.”

One of their videos features adult film legend Nina Hartley, who landed Gow in hot water in 2018 after she paid him $5,000 in La Crosse discretionary funds to give a 90-minute speech assuring students that it’s “OK to like porn.”

After a severe backlash, Gow apologized and promised to repay the school from his own bank account.

“He seemed like someone who had a dramatically different life experience than the rest of us,” Gow said of Hartley at the time.

But the educator seems to have a lot of experience in his field of work.

Gow and Wilson – who met after he chaired the search committee that selected him to lead the university – wrote two books together detailing their non-traditional relationships in the porn industry, although they were written under pseudonyms.

They published “Monogamy with Benefits: How Porn Enriches Our Relationships” in 2015, followed by “Married with Benefits: Our Real-Life Adult Industry Adventure” in 2018.

In one of the books, the couple stated that they were “pretty sure there would be a scandal if our peers found out about what we’ve done.”

Gow told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he previously hid parts of his life but decided recently to reverse course and “be a little more open about this free speech issue.”

The former chancellor had announced in August his plans to retire at the end of the 2023-24 academic year and return to the faculty as a communications professor.

At the time, Gow told the student newspaper, the Daily Cardinal, he was looking forward to spending more time with his wife and working on a cookbook and a “video” to “maybe put on the internet.”
