Investigators are baffled by the case of a woman who died after eating chocolate she got from a palm reader who said she didn’t have long to live.
“He was vomiting, his vision was a bit blurry, his body was soft… just a few hours,” the victim’s cousin Bianca Cristina told Globo 1 about his previous passing.
The tragedy occurred on August 3 when Fernanda Silva Valoz da Cruz Pinto, 27, was walking through downtown Maceió, Brazil — a mecca for fortune-tellers, Jam Press reported.
The mother of one was reportedly stopped by an elderly woman who asked to read her palm.
Pinto accepts, and the street seer tells the young woman that she only has “a few days left to live.”
The fortuneteller then gave Pinto a piece of chocolate as a parting gift. “As it is [the candy] was packed, it was not thought [that it could pose any danger],” Cristina’s cousin told local media. “And because he was hungry, he decided to eat it.”

A few hours after eating it, Pinto began to feel very ill, experiencing symptoms ranging from vomiting to dizziness and blurred vision.
He reportedly described his condition in a text message sent to his family shortly after taking the sweets.
“My heart is beating fast. I have vomited. But I have this taste in my mouth,” explained Pinto. “So bitter. bad My vision is blurry. I am very weak.”
He continued, “I leaned on the water tank. I almost fell. I almost met God. I don’t know why I’m like this bro. I feel bad all day.”

Due to the patient’s pre-existing conditions, including gastritis and ulcers, the family initially did not suspect foul play but grew suspicious after Pinto mentioned his encounter with the woman who appeared to be a fortune teller.
“Because I received chocolate in the city center. I ate it. After that, I feel sick,” the deceased sent a message before his death. “At the time, it didn’t cross my mind. She is an old woman.”
The woman was then accompanied by her cousin to the Santa Casa de Misericordia hospital where her nose began to bleed upon arrival.
Despite the doctors’ best efforts, the patient died the next day on August 4.

Just two months later, the cause of his death was confirmed.
A toxicology report carried out on the biosample from the post-mortem revealed that the deceased’s body had contained high concentrations of the pesticides sulfotep and terbufos.
“This substance is very common in cases of poisoning, [and] drunk in Brazil because of their easy access, despite being controlled by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply,” said Thalmanny Goulart, Head of the Chemistry and Toxicology Laboratory who analyzed the samples.
Unfortunately, the examination did not confirm that the candy was the cause of Pinto’s poisoning, Globo 1 reported.
However, the family reported the palm reader to authorities, who are still trying to identify the suspect.
The Civil Police have since registered her case as “an unexplained death, and are now awaiting forensic results so they can confirm the speculation of murder.”
“I leaned on the water tank. I almost fell. I almost met God,” the victim wrote in a text to his family shortly before his death. “I don’t know why I’m like this, sister. I feel bad all day.”Jam Press
Some authorities speculate that the fortune teller may have been hired to kill da Cruz Pinto, but his motive remains unclear.
“I don’t see anyone having a reason to do this to him, but we don’t know what’s in anyone’s heart,” said another cousin of the victim, Lumenita Valoz. “Whether someone ordered her to be killed or if the woman did it because she wanted to, only the police will know.”
Pinto leaves behind a 9-year-old daughter with special needs.
