Woman returns from vacation to find her Atlanta home demolished by mistake: ‘I am furious’

An Atlanta woman is searching for answers after her family’s longtime property was reduced to rubble while she was away on vacation, apparently due to an error by a local moving and demolition company.

Sarah Hodgson said she was alerted to the unauthorized destruction by a neighbor, who called to ask if she had hired a company to demolish a vacant home in southwest Atlanta.

“I said ‘no’ and he said, ‘Well there’s somebody here who’s just tearing down the whole house and tearing it all down,'” Hodgson said in an interview with the AP Saturday.

When the neighbor came out to confront the workers, Hodgson said they told him to “shut up and mind his own business.”

Hodgson said he then called family members to visit the property to see what was going on. The family member asked to see the worker’s permit.

Sarah Hodgson returned from holiday last month to find her family’s house had been accidentally demolished. When the site supervisor checked the permits, Hodgson said he admitted they were at the wrong address.

Work crews then packed up their equipment and left the property, leaving the house in ruins, Hodgson said.

Although the house has been built for about 15 years, Hodgson said the lawn is maintained and all taxes are current on the property.

“How can people just go up and tear someone’s property and then drive away? How can they think that’s OK?” he said, expressing concern about any gas or water lines that may have been damaged in the incident.

Hodgson said the company responsible for the accident, Atlanta-based You Call It We Haul It, has not yet contacted him. He said he has filed a police report and has spoken to a lawyer.

“I think he owes us an apology, and he needs to fix the problem. He has to solve that problem,” said Hodgson.

In a statement sent to Fox 5 Atlanta, You Call It We Haul It said they are working to resolve the matter.

Calls made to the company on Sunday went straight to a full voicemail.
