You’ll recall that Heche — whose eldest son, Homer Laffoon, is the current special administrator of his estate — “passed out, in a coma,” shortly after crashing into Mishele’s home. The mother of two was trapped in her vehicle for 45 minutes as the building caught fire.

Although the Emmy Award winner never regained consciousness, she remained on life support until August 12, allowing medical officials to take some of her organs for donation. Heche’s official cause of death was heat injury and smoke inhalation. The Los Angeles County medical examiner also listed a sternum fracture from blunt force trauma as contributing to his death. His death was ruled an accident.

The couple stated that the house had caught fire after a speeding car crashed into it. Although they never referred to Heche by name, it was clear who the statement was aimed at. In their words:

“Lynne and her family narrowly escaped physical injury, and for that we are very grateful. The house, however, was fully engulfed – with 59 firefighters taking 65 minutes to extinguish the flames – and was immediately red flagged by the LAFD, requiring Lynne to leave the place she loved.”

Durand and Fingerhut stated that even more devastating their neighbor “lost possessions, souvenirs, all equipment for his business including his laptop and iPad, all his clothes and basic needs, and all household items.”

However, Mishele was able to “pull some damaged sentimental items from the wreckage” with the help of several firefighters. Neighbors who helped described the victim as a “kind and generous” person who did not hesitate to “offer help to others.”

They finished by asking to “ask the community to come together and help Lynne start over. Please, please join us – 100% of the proceeds of this fundraiser go directly to Lynne Mishele.”

The fundraiser quickly caught the attention of several people who contributed as best they could. Some people like Alicia Gabriel, who donated, expressed their sadness that Mishele had gone through “this terrible moment.”
