Australian professional cyclist Rohan Dennis, a two-time world champion who retired earlier this year, has been arrested and charged for allegedly hitting his wife, also a retired cyclist, with his car.
Dennis, 33, was arrested in the city of Adelaide after police were called to Avenel Gardens Road shortly after 8pm on Saturday in relation to a woman who had been hit by a car, according to Australian broadcaster 10 News First.
Melissa Hoskins, 32, suffered serious injuries as a result of the incident and was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment where she later died, according to a release from South Australian Police.
Hoskins, a retired Olympic cyclist, is the mother of Dennis’ two children.
The couple has been married since 2018.
Dennis has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and endangering life.
He has been granted bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 13.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers and they will remain anonymous.
