Wynonna Judd Addresses Rumors She Fought With Sister Ashley Over Naomi Judd’s Will

Singer Wynonna Judd has finally opened up about rumors that she was fighting with her sister Ashley Judd over their mother’s will after Naomi Judd took her own life on April 30 at the age of 76.

About five months after their mother died, Wynonna finally felt comfortable talking about how she was grieving her mother’s death. A big part of that involves leaning on her older sister Ashley for support… and dispelling rumors that the two have bad blood against Naomi’s will.

In a new interview with PEOPLE, Wynonna, 58, clarified that there was “no falling out” with her sister, 54, over the will, despite the headlines it has claimed for months.

“Someone told me when I was at Ashley’s house, ‘Hey, do you know they’re saying this about you?’ I go, ‘Huh? I had a fight with Ashley? Oh. More?’” Wynonna recalled. “Fighting what? I have such a great life. Ashley has a great life. Why do we fight because of will?”

According to court documents, Naomi has appointed her 33-year-old husband, Larry Strickland, as the sole executor of her estate. Many were surprised that Naomi did not name her two daughters, Wynonna and Ashley, in the published documents. However, Wynonna told PEOPLE that when Larry dies, she and Ashley will “split up” the estate, and thus has no plans to go against Naomi’s wishes.

“I’m the last one in this family – and if Ashley was here, I hope she would agree with me – who knows something like this,” he told the publication. “I wasn’t smart enough to go, ‘I’m going to contest the will.’ It never occurred to me.”

It should be noted that Larry Strickland is not the biological father of any of the girls. Wynonna’s father is Charles Jordan and Ashley’s father is Michael Cimenella; however, Wynonna has spoken candidly about how her mother raised them both as a single mother.

“I think we’re connected in a very different way because I’m an orphan,” Wynonna tells PEOPLE. “Both my parents are gone, and I depend on Ashley. He depends on me in a different way which is about compassion. It’s not about being successful and smart and capable. It’s about, ‘I love you.’ ‘I love you too.’ We are vulnerable to each other, and we are soft.”

“As siblings, we disagree a lot,” she admits. “But when it came to our mom, we both looked at each other and said, ‘She’s quite the character.'”

However, that is not to say that the two have a perfect relationship. The two have gone out several times over the years, including in 2012, when both Ashley and Naomi skipped Wynonna’s wedding to her husband, musician Cactus Moser.

“[Ashley and I] were separated at the ages of 14 and 18 with success,” said Wynonna. “So we’ve missed a lot of time together.” However, with the help of a life coach, the two brothers understand each other better.

Fortunately, having a life coach has taught the two brothers how to communicate and compromise, and have more compassion for each other.

“Ashley and I are very different people, and we learned that we have more in common than we don’t,” she said. “That’s really interesting because when you’re young, you think there’s more of a divide. We had a really deep conversation the other day, and we got through it and nobody got hurt.”

“We’ve been able to implement the process our life coach gave us: communication, compromise and compassion,” Wynonna continued. “In my disagreements with Ashley and Mom, I never gave up on loving them, because I knew that behind it all, there was a place to meet and connect. I tell people: Try to find something you have in common. Ashley and I, when everything goes to h—, can play cards and hang out.”

Wynonna added that “the relationship I have with my sister is the most powerful in my life” and it seems to be true for Ashley as well, who opened up about the grief of her mother’s death in the public eye in a powerful op-ed that can be read here.
