Yahoo has always been an integral part of the lives of Internet users. Whether it’s for emailing or chatting, Yahoo has served all the purposes for which it was created. A long time ago, Yahoo Messenger and its chat rooms were very popular all over the world.
yahoo! The chat room feature was first launched on January 7, 1997 as a public chat room service. Subsequently, the first public version of Yahoo! Pager was announced and had Yahoo! Chat as one of its features.
90s kids have so many memories of using Yahoo chat rooms, chatting with random people from all over the world and becoming friends with some of them too.
In 1999, this service was renamed Yahoo! Messenger and in 2012 Yahoo shut down the chat room service entirely. A large number of Yahoo users were upset when Yahoo announced that it was withdrawing its ‘Yahoo chat room’ characteristic.
The reason they disclosed this decision was that it would help them make room for future growth and allow them to introduce other Yahoo products that are lagging behind.
After the Yahoo Chat Room feature ended, in 2015, a new yahoo! Delivery courier was released. It had all the features that were enough to replace the old one. The previous version of Yahoo Messenger app was almost similar to other messaging apps. It allowed its users to send free text messages, GIFs, images, emoticons, and other important documents.
Many changes have been made to Yahoo Messenger over the years. So when it came back in 2015, it enabled the ability to undo sent messages in the messenger, chat with a group of people at the same time, and much more.
Apart from this, a chat room service, VoIP, Yahoo! 360 integration, voicemail, video calls, Flickr support, YouTube streaming in chat, and the ability to chat with Facebook friends are some of the other features that Yahoo Messenger offers.
Finally, on July 17, 2018, Yahoo! Messenger was completely shut down. But it was partially replaced by a new service called Yahoo Together which was also discontinued on April 4, 2019. So at this time, Yahoo doesn’t have a replacement for its messaging services.
It is a common action taken by reputed services like Yahoo to completely stop some of their services. They always look for areas where they have more room for growth even if it means ending the existing ones. There are also other important factors such as user churn, emergence of competing services, loss of money, etc., which are taken into account before making such a decision.
According to the statement released by Yahoo, they ended Yahoo Messenger to save other communication tools time and resources as well.
There are a number of apps that have been discovered over the years such as Facebook Messenger, Skype, and Whatsapp. All of these services may not work similarly to Yahoo Chat Room, but they will definitely work for sending text messages, pictures, videos, or making audio or video calls.
