Yashomati Chandrakant Thakur was born on Friday, 17 May 1974 (age 48 years; in 2022) in Mojari, Amravati district of Maharashtra. He studied LLB from Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh College of Law, Amravati University (2002). His zodiac sign is Taurus. Yashomati entered politics after the death of her husband.

His father, Chandrakant Thakur (fondly referred to as Bhayyasaheb Thakur), was a politician who represented the Teosa State Assembly constituency as an independent candidate in 1978 and as a member of the INC in 1980. He died in 2018 due to kidney disease. His mother’s name is Pushpamala Thakur.

Career

Yashomati Thakur entered politics as a member of the Indian National Congress (INC). In 2004, he contested the Maharashtra Assembly Elections for the first time from Teosa (also known as Tivsa) constituency in Amravati district, but he lost the election; BJP candidate Sahebrao Thatte won the seat. She held the post of General Secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress from 2004 to 2009. At the same time, she worked as a member of the state women’s commission. After that, he joined Rahul Gandhi’s youth brigade, where he was given the responsibilities of Gujarat, Daman and Diu, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. He has served as Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee Secretary, All India Congress Committee Secretary, and Maharashtra State Congress President. He contested and won the Teosa Assembly seat in the 2009 Maharashtra Assembly Elections, defeating Shiv Sena candidate Sanjay Band by 26,130 votes. He was re-elected as MLA from Teosa in 2014 and 2019. On 30 December 2019, he was sworn in as the Cabinet Minister of the Ministry of Women and Child Development in the Uddhav Thackeray-led Mahavikas Aghadi Government; he served in this capacity till 29 June 2022. In 2018, the Congress appointed Yashomati as the party secretary for Karnataka. On 16 December 2019, he was appointed as the President of the Vidhansabha Talika by Nana Patole for the winter session of the Maharashtra Assembly held in Nagpur Vidarbha. As an MLA in the Government of Maharashtra, he was the Caretaker minister of Amravati District (2020-2022).

Controversy

2012 Police Assault Case

Yashomati Thakur and three others, including her driver, were sentenced to three months by a sessions court in Amravati for allegedly assaulting a policeman in Amravati district in 2012. Subsequently, she filed an appeal in the high court against the conviction and sought suspension of the sentence by way of discharge temporary. The incident took place on March 24, 2012, in Chunabhatti area, which comes under Rajapeth police station limits in Amravati. Allegedly, Yashomati Thakur, her driver Sagar Suresh Khandekar, and party workers Sharad Kashirav Jawanjal and Raju Kisan Ingle, thrashed traffic police constable Ulhas Raurale when he stopped his vehicle from entering a one-way lane. In 2020, the court sentenced Thakur to three months imprisonment in the eight-year case and also imposed a fine of Rs. 15,500. He was fined the same amount by the district and session courts.

Facts/Trivia

  • In the 2014 Maharashtra Assembly Elections, Yashomati Thakur contested against her younger sister Sanyogita Naik Nimbalkar, who contested the election as an independent candidate with the support of local organization Prahar. During the 2009 state assembly elections, Nimbalkar led Thakur’s campaign and contributed to his victory. While addressing the media, Nimbalkar, while expressing his disappointment with Thakur, said,

    I campaigned for my brother during the 2009 election and thought he would bring development. But he didn’t do anything, so I decided to compete against him.”
