Zac Efron Talks Insomnia And Depression Over ‘Baywatch’ Body

Efron recently sat down with Men’s Health for their October 2022 issue and opened up about the rigorous training he went through to take on Matt Brody’s body in the action comedy. The actress, who revealed to an interviewer that she is trying to land an undisclosed role, said she will not prepare for a new project like she did for “Baywatch.”

“That Baywatch look, I don’t know if that’s really achievable. There is too little water in the skin. Like, it’s fake; it looks CGI’d,” Efron admitted. He explained that he wasn’t willing to do what it took to achieve that look because of his meticulousness. In his words, “…that required Lasix, a powerful diuretic, to achieve it. So I don’t have to do that. I’d rather have an extra, you know, 2 to 3 percent body fat.”

Aside from the diuretics, “The Greatest Showman” star revealed that he over-trained and was subjected to eating the same three meals a day for the duration of the shoot. To make matters worse, he didn’t get enough sleep because after a day of filming, he had to wake up at 4:00 a.m. to start training again.

At first, Efron was excited about the role and the idea of ​​the hard work it would take to bring it to life. However, he began to feel the ill effects during his recovery. “I started having insomnia,” he remembers, “and I fell into a pretty bad depression for a long time. Something about that experience burned me. I had a really hard time making it recently. Finally they considered it to take way too. many diuretics too long, and they mess things up.”

The 34-year-old stated that she was not trying to complain about the role but just wanted to let people know the reality of how terrible it is to achieve the “Baywatch” body. According to him, only six months after filming he regained his true identity. But that again is not without interruptions.

With “Baywatch” and other film roles behind him, thanks to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Efron retreated to Australia for a sabbatical and began rethinking his approach to fitness. “At one point, that was my dream – what would it be like to not have to be in shape all the time,” he explained to the publication. “What if I just said, ‘Screw it’ and let myself go? So I tried it, and I succeeded.”

Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out the way Efron had hoped, as he felt “sad”. She admits, “My body wouldn’t feel good; I just didn’t feel alive. I felt numb and slow.” Even when he was training, he couldn’t help but think about breaking a sweat.

“I like to push myself and really put it all in, until I have to. Otherwise, I don’t feel like myself,” Efron shared. After realizing, the former child star opted for a more balanced and mindful approach to fitness. She finds comfort in techniques such as foam rolling, self-massage, yoga and ice baths.

In the interview, Efron also addressed rumors that he had plastic surgery on his face. The actress sparked concern in April 2021 after her photo appeared as part of “Earth Day! Musical Program”, which was posted on Facebook.

Efron’s face looked slightly swollen with his chin looking square, leading fans to think he had gone under the knife. More than a year after the controversy, he shared that the deformed chin was the result of a broken jaw he suffered when he hit his chin against the granite corner of a fountain.

He explained that he had been running through his house in his socks when he slipped. He was unconscious, and when he awoke he found his chin hanging from his face. Efron stated that his facial muscles grew “really, really big” and he had to work with a physical therapist to stop the growth.
