Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin may start World War III without more US help – bluntly comparing his adversary to a “second Hitler.”
Zelensky gave the ominous warning in an interview with “60 Minutes” in which he said that his country “is literally fighting a nuclear state that threatens to destroy the world.”
“The whole world has to decide whether we want to stop Putin, or whether we want to start the beginning of a world war,” Zelensky told CBS news anchor Scott Pelley.
“We cannot change Putin. Russian society has lost the respect of the world. They elected him and elected him again — and raised a second Hitler,” Zelensky said, directly comparing Putin to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
“We cannot go back to the past. But we can stop it here.”
He claims that if Putin succeeds in his invasion of Ukraine, the Russian president will attack other countries as well to expand his empire – just as Hitler did in the years before World War II.
Zelensky described Putin as “a person who has made his way with such bloody actions, with everything he says cannot be trusted.

“There is no trust in such a person because he has not been human for a long time.”
Speaking about the need for more aid, the Ukrainian president said: “We defend the values of the whole world. And it is the Ukrainians who pay the highest price.
“We are really fighting for our freedom, we are dying,” he continued. “We are not fiction, we are not books. We are fighting a nuclear nation that threatens to destroy the world.

“If Ukraine falls, what will happen in 10 years? Just think about it. If [the Russians] get to poland, what next? Third World War?”
Zelensky also thanked the US for the support it has given the war-torn country – worth nearly $70 billion – but argued more was needed.
“United States of America [is] support Ukraine financially and I am grateful for this,” he said. “I just think they don’t just support Ukraine. If Ukraine falls, Putin will surely go further.

“What will the United States do when Putin gets to the Baltic countries? When he reached the Polish border? He will.”
“This is a lot of money, We are very grateful,” Zelensky said of the US support. “What else does Ukraine have to do for everyone to measure our great gratitude? We die in this war.”
But when Pelley asked Zelensky how much more aid he believed Ukraine needed, the Ukrainian president was unable to provide an answer.

Instead, he claimed Putin threatened a possible nuclear war in Europe.
“I think he will continue to threaten,” Zelensky reflected.
“He is waiting for the United States to become less stable. He thinks that will happen during the US election.

“He will look for instability in Europe and the United States. He will use the risk of using nuclear weapons to drive it. He will continue to threaten,” Zelensky warned.
He admitted that progress on defeating Russia had been slow, telling Pelley: “It’s a difficult situation. I will be completely honest with you.
“We have the initiative – this is an advantage. We stopped the Russian attack and we are moving towards a counterattack,” he said. “And even then, it is not very fast.

“It is important that we move forward every day and liberate the territory,” he continued. “We need to liberate our territory as much as possible and move forward, even if it is less than [half a mile or] a hundred [yards]. We must do it.
“We cannot give Putin a break,” he said.
Zelensky is expected to visit the White House and the Capitol this week, when he visits the US for the United Nations General Assembly.

He is expected to make the case for continued American support for Ukraine, as Congress debates President Joe Biden’s plan to provide another $24 billion in military and humanitarian aid for the country.
The US President has requested an additional $13.1 billion military aid package for Ukraine and $8.5 billion for humanitarian support.
It also includes $2.3 billion in financing and catalyzing donors through the World Bank.
But conservative members of Congress have pushed for sweeping federal spending cuts and some of those allied with Donald Trump, the former president, specifically want to stop money to Ukraine.
