Dwyane Wade has opened up about a moment that made him reflect on his parenting.
The former NBA star declared that his daughter Zaya “hesitated” when he had to meet her and her stepmother, Gabrielle Union, being LGBTQ+ forced her to reevaluate her parenting style. He made the shocking revelation during a panel session with basketball player Chris Paul and moderator Lisa Metelus on Tuesday, June 27.

During the recent annual Creative Artists Agency (CAA) Amplify Summit, Wade discussed her journey towards understanding and validating Zaya’s transgender identity. Speaking about the “landmark moment” when the now 16-year-old discovered he was transgender, the three-time NBA champion explained that he had been ready to speak since he was three years old.

The preparation became even more necessary after Zaya came out as gay in a school assignment at the age of eight. However, the actual moment was different from what she could have imagined as her baby girl’s fear took over. Recounting the events of that day, the former Miami Heat player stated:
“So I came home, and I just remember my son being afraid to talk to me, like hiding in my wife’s arms in the chair. I think I’m this dad who’s like, ‘Hey, come and tell me anything! I’m a cool dad.’ And the fear on my son’s face to tell me.
The anxiety prompted her to look “at myself in the mirror and ask why my son is afraid to tell me something about himself.” He then claimed that he probably did the same thing that most people and parents do, which is to “put our fears and everything on our children.”
“So I had to look at myself in the mirror and ask myself… What is causing my manhood to scare my son?” he continued to share.
In the end, what saved the situation was communication and “education that needed to happen.” Since Zaya has knowledge of the subject and through her experiential research, she is able to control her identity while helping her father improve his listening skills.
Wade’s admission of not having an appropriate reaction to his daughter comes months after a court granted the teenager’s request to change her name and gender. According to a legal document reviewed by The Blast in February:
“Petition for Recognition of Gender Change and Issuance of New Birth Certificate filed by Zion Malachi Airamis Wade, by and through gal, Dwyane T. Wade, Jr. on 22/08/2022 Partially Granted.”

The newspaper added that the “Decree was signed and filed,” with the petitioner’s name changed from “Zion Malachi Airamis Wade” to “Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade.” It then stated that “Petitioner’s gender was changed from male to female.”

Wade and Union caused a stir when they took to social media to mark Zaya’s 16th birthday last month. At the time, The Blast observed that the “Being Mary Jane” alum led the momentous celebration with a ten-slide Instagram update featuring photos of her and the celebrants.

Wade followed in his superstar wife’s footsteps and started his own birthday tribute with a raunchy photo of him and his daughter beaming at the camera. The girl with the fashion sense of the moment is highlighted in the accompanying slides, including a photo of her in a cropped long-sleeved jean jacket and dark sunglasses and another in a white dress with small straps and added mesh sleeves.
