Lambert was honored with an award at the 2023 Creative Fusion Focus Initiative Gala for her role in the Sundance Film Festival drama “Fairyland.” While accepting her award at the ceremony, she talked about her experience performing at the 2009 AMAs and the reaction she got after she kissed a man on stage.

“I’m doing the kind of show I’ve seen since I was a teenager,” he said Entertainment Weekly. “I’m sexy and have dancers on stage, and I do some naughty moves with some dancers, and impromptu kisses with my bass player.”

The star walked up to his bassist, pulled his hair, and proceeded to kiss him for a few seconds. He stated that “he felt” the moment he shined in full rockstar mode.

The “For Your Entertainment” singer went on to explain the negative backlash she received after her performance, claiming that ABC, which airs the awards show, didn’t like it and “temporarily banned her”.

“I got off the stage and I was in trouble. The network was like, ‘How dare you?’ They banned me for a while,” Lambert said, via EW. “They threatened me with a lawsuit. It’s like, ‘Oh, okay, that’s where we are.’”

The “American Idol” alum later explained that she had no idea the single act of kissing another man on stage would cause such a reaction. He says, “I used to be in a bubble in LA among artists, weird people, and I didn’t realize that something like that would ruffle feathers like it did.”

During his acceptance speech, Lambert, 40, revealed that after the aftermath of his performance at the AMAs, he decided to keep going and “be as gay as I can,” to be a part of something new that could help “affect change.”

“If it gets me into trouble, it gets me into trouble, but I’m not going to back down from it,” the singer said of her decision to be “flamboyant” and “wild.”

He recalls the fact that his life and actions have helped other young people come out. “Over the last few years, I’ve met more young people who saw me on TV when we were kids and said, ‘You helped me talk to my parents about being gay,'” he explained.

Concluding his acceptance speech for the award, the “Ghost Town” singer acknowledged the fact that things are quite different now than they were back then and went on to make his case to be seen.

Lambert believes that signing gay talent is a “viable business move” in the music industry. And the film industry is moving forward. “More and more strange stories are being told.”

“Visibility is very strong,” the talented artist declared per EW. “The LGBTQ community has been attacked for a long time, and is being attacked again. There is a lot of conservative rejection, and making art that represents the queer experience and stars people, which gives hope and strength to the LGBTQ community. It inspires us.

“It makes us shed some of the shame and self-loathing we grew up with. I am very excited to be an artist at this time. Many challenges are ahead of us. Not over yet. There is still work to be done, but I am very proud of the work that has been done so far,” said Lambert.
