Andy Serkis Is ‘Amazed’ By Fan Reaction To ‘Andor’ Character Kino Loy

Although actor Andy Serkis is best known among “Star Wars” fans for playing Supreme Leader Snoke in 2015’s “The Force Awakens” and 2017’s “The Last Jedi,” he recently became known for a new character: Kino Loy.

Serkis reappears in the first season of the Disney+ live-action series, “Andor.” Although fans were a little surprised to see the actor back, given his past history with the franchise, Kino Loy is fast becoming a fan favorite character.

Many fans have expressed hope to see Serkis’ character again in the second season, prompting the actor to say that he has been “amazed and delighted” by the response to his “Star Wars” character.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly on their Dagobah Dispatch podcast before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Koy admitted that he didn’t expect the fan response to his character. However, he said that he was “amazed and delighted” by the reaction fans had to the character, praising “the brilliance of actor Tony Gilroy in crafting these characters in the way that he has.”

He also shows Kino Loy’s desire for freedom which resonates with the audience. “There’s something very zeitgeist about the oppression that’s going on in that story,” he said. “The desire for freedom is something that I think really resonates because of the world we live in and the oppression we see around us. And that’s why I think he’s been received the way he’s been received by the audience that I’ve met and talked to people who respond to the character.”

After chanting “One Way Out” and exiting the facility, Kino Loy broke the audience’s heart when he uttered the line, “I can’t swim.” Cassian Andor’s character, played by Diego Luna, is taken away, and fans never find out if Kino Loy actually makes the leap and swims to freedom, or stays behind, facing an uncertain future.

With the second and final season slated to air next year, fans are hoping they’ll get closure to Kino Loy’s story. However, Andy Serkis surprised viewers when he revealed on the podcast that they actually shot the scene “a few different ways,” saying that it was a moment “that needed that kind of exploration.”

“We were lucky enough to have the time to be able to do it because shooting on a TV schedule, often it’s very fast — unlike film where you can take time between takes and you can develop on the go,” he explains. “But it demands a different set of investigations about how it will be delivered. Because it is an important moment. So I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to explore.”

Unfortunately, Andy Serkis revealed that “There’s not much discussion” about Kino Loy’s fate, as the story continues to follow Andor’s journey towards the Rebellion. Serki noted that fans never really saw him die, but before fans’ warm response to the character, he said there was “no discussion at all” about what happened to Kino Loy.

“I’m pretty excited about the arc that I get to play, which is a very beautifully done illustration of a guy with a broken belief system who then has nothing to believe in, which is then revived by someone who inspires him to find himself again, and then sacrifice himself,” said Serkis.

“So it’s a very unusual journey to go on in a prison environment, and a very sterile prison environment — quite a touching journey given the environment they’re in,” he continued. “But that’s the brilliance of Tony Gilroy’s writing. He provides this environment for characters to thrive and survive. And you learn about their inner journey, their psychology, their complexities and vulnerabilities in response to the world they live in.”
