Anti-cop Minnesota Democratic Party official left bloodied in violent carjacking — now calls for tougher crime laws

A Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party official who once vowed to “dismantle” the Minneapolis Police Department is now calling for tougher criminal laws after he was beaten and bloodied in a carjacking outside his home this week.

Shivanthi Sathanandan, the second vice chair of the DFL, shared the news of the attack in a Facebook post on Wednesday, where she was outraged that the four young suspects should be brought to justice.

“I have a broken leg, deep cuts on my head, bruises and cuts all over my body. And I’m angry,” wrote Sathanandan, who said the beating happened in front of his 4-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son around 7:45 Tuesday night.

“These guys know what they’re doing. I don’t THINK they’ve done this before. But they are still on OUR STREETS. Killing mother. Give psychological trauma to the baby that cannot be alleviated during the lifetime of therapy. Without hesitation and without regret,” continued Sathanandan.

Included in the post was a selfie of Sathanandan, showing blood pouring down the right side of his face.

“I am now part of the statistics. I wasn’t silent when I fought this man to save my life and my baby’s, and I won’t be silent now. We need to get illegal firearms off our streets, arrest these young people who are running wild creating chaos throughout our cities, and HOLD THEM IN CUSTODY AND PREACH THEM,” he said.

“Look at my face. REMEMBER ME when you think about supporting letting juveniles and young people out of detention to roam our streets instead of HOLDING THEM ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS.”

Minneapolis police confirmed the car theft in the Folwell Sathanandan neighborhood in a statement to KSTP. His car was later found, but no suspects have been arrested.

Sathanandan thanked the “incredible” Minneapolis PD for helping in the terrifying experience — a far cry from his attitude toward law enforcement three years ago, when he posted online that he and other activists were “going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department.”

“MPD has systematically failed the Black Community, they have failed ALL OF US. It’s time to build a new infrastructure that works for ALL communities. If you still disagree with those BASIC FACTS, I’m not sure what to say to you,” he said in a post on June 5, 2020 — less than two weeks after George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police.

In another post on June 2 of that year, he praised the Minneapolis School Board’s decision to end its contract with the department: “MPD should have no place in our children’s schools,” he wrote.

Minnesota DFL Chairman Ken Martin told KSTP in a statement Thursday that he was “heartbroken by the news of Shivanthi’s attack.”

“It is my sincere hope that the people who attacked Shivanthi are quickly brought to justice and face punishment commensurate with the gravity of their crime,” said Martin. “My heart goes out to Shivanthi and her family and I wish them a speedy recovery from that horrific experience.”
