The son of a Brooklyn woman who was allegedly killed by a sledgehammer-wielding roommate can’t remember his father because of temporary amnesia — but was moved out of the ICU this week in what is considered a “remarkable improvement,” according to an update on fundraising in line for family.
Meanwhile, the crazed man who allegedly beat the boy, 5-year-old David, his sister, Sophia, and his mother, Zhao Zhao, appeared in Brooklyn Criminal Court on Tuesday to answer charges of second-degree murder, assault and possession of a weapon.
Liyong Ye, 47, tried to hide from the press by bowing his head before the summary hearing, where a judge detained him and transferred his case to the district’s Supreme Court.
Zhao, the child’s 43-year-old mother, did not survive Ye’s alleged assault at the family’s Sunset Park apartment last Wednesday.
Her children have recovered from the severe injuries Ye allegedly inflicted — but they are finally making progress, according to an update posted Monday on a GoFundMe page set up for the children and their grief-stricken father.

“Last night, [David] has been successfully transferred from the ICU to a standard hospital room, marking an important step forward in his recovery,” the update read.
“Today, he can sleep soundly and rest better,” it continued. “This is a remarkable improvement from just a few days ago, when he would have nightmares and disturbing memories in his sleep, making it very difficult for him to rest.”
An update from the previous day stated that little David “is dealing with temporary amnesia and cannot recognize his father” but “The silver lining is that he can express his needs and thoughts, a step forward that brings hope.”
Her sister, 3-year-old Sophia, has also made what the update called “great progress” despite recently battling a lung infection.

“He is in the process of being removed from his respirator, which is a major milestone on his road to recovery,” Monday’s update read. “Although the most critical and dangerous phase seems to be behind us, we will not give up because tomorrow presents its own challenges.”
Police found Zhao and her two children lying in a cramped room on the second floor of the Sunset Park building at about 2pm on August 23.
Officers had responded to a 911 call about an assault in progress, the NYPD said.
Police said they arrested a bloodied Ye as he tried to exit the building, which is located on 52nd Street near 5th Avenue.

Ye and his 9-year-old son also lived in the small three-room apartment with the family he allegedly assaulted, police said.
Heartbreaking pictures released by the family show the damage allegedly caused by the madman.
In one of the images, a child with a swollen eye wears a neck brace as they lie in a hospital bed, surrounded by tubes.

Zhao’s husband, Jing Hong Liu, will not be working as he sits by his children’s bedside, according to GoFundMe.
“Whatever happens next, we will face it together and provide the best care I can offer my children,” Liu said, according to a news release from Sen’s office. Iwen Chu (D-Brooklyn) state.
As of Tuesday, the fundraiser had raised more than $147,000 of its $200,000 goal.
