“Real Time” host Bill Maher offered caution ahead of former President Trump’s four criminal trials, predicting they will make him look like a “revolutionary leader” as the 2024 campaign unfolds.
In an interview published Monday by Reason Magazine, Maher shared his pessimism about the upcoming election, which is increasingly looking like a rematch between Trump and President Biden.
“I think I’m where a lot of people are: I hope Biden will step aside,” Maher said. “Well, first of all, I hope Trump doesn’t win, but he really could, and it’s looking more and more like he will. But a lot can change in a year. We never faced any trial of him—even if the January 6 commission and the media and everything didn’t change people’s minds to like him, I think this trial will only make him look like a revolutionary leader.”
He continued, “All you have to say is, ‘The people who talk about me are corrupt!’ And then your embarrassing behavior becomes a badge of honor. So whether the test will help or hurt him, it’s hard to say. I think it’s going to be about a draw, and then it’s going to be a referendum on which side is crazier.”

“And both sides have a case, although I’ve always sided with ‘Trump must be totally crazy.’ He’s stupid and crazy They are two completely different things, but he has both. I’m more worried about the crazy side, but crazy pictures, crazy picture, it’s interesting. And when he shows up, come on, people will cover him, watch him. It won’t be boring,” Maher said.
“And in this fact-free society, I don’t think any issue really gets the majority of people’s votes. It doesn’t matter what they say or do, because they each have their own media sources, who are in the business of feeding back to their audience what they want to hear,” he added.
Back in March, Maher sounded the alarm that the first indictment brought by New York DA Alvin Bragg would be “rocket fuel” for Trump’s 2024 campaign.

“I just want to go on record saying I think it’s a big mistake if they bring these charges. Not this one, you know,” Maher said at the time. “I mean, yes, he’s done a lot of bad things, and I’m sure he did this — everything they accused him of. [doing], he did it. But first, it won’t work. It will be rocket fuel for his 2024 campaign. And it’s just going to look at the MAGA countries like, ‘Oh, you know, you try with Mueller, you try with Ukraine, you try with January 6. Now we go to the porn stars? Really? Are you willing to do that?!’”
Following the first indictment, Trump’s GOP polling soared and remained high as three more rounds of indictments were brought against him, two from Special Counsel Jack Smith and one from Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in Georgia, totaling 91 charges.
Maher also revealed in an interview that someone “quite famous” berated him for allowing Republicans on his HBO show.

“I have [Ron] DeSantis and Ted Cruz this year, and Bill Barr. And yes, to answer your question, I can think of two people—and I won’t say who they are; one of them is pretty famous—just yelled at me in an email about it,” Maher said. “And my answer to that is: F— off. Do you know? You live in your ivory tower. me will talk to everyone in half the country you find so sad. They will not expel themselves, even if they are miserable. And some of them are! And some on the left are also sad, and very annoying. That’s the country!”
He continued, “When historians look back in a hundred years, if we were still here, I don’t think they would have divided the country like we did into these two camps. They will say: As a many people, they are annoying. It occurs in different forms on both sides. As people, they do not believe in science. On the right, they think global warming is a hoax or whatever nonsense they believe about it. And on the left, they think men can have babies. That’s what they will say. They’ll say, ‘As a people, they’ve just lost their s–t.’”
