Cormac McCarthy was born on July 20, 1933 in Providence, Rhodes Island. He was born to Charles Joseph McCarthy and Gladys Christina McGrail. The couple had six children and Cormac McCarthy was one of them. He was born into an Irish Catholic family and in 1937, they moved to Knoxville, Tennessee.

His father used to work for the Tennessee Valley Authority. They first lived in Sequoyah Hills but moved to Martin Mill Pike in South Knoxville in 1941. Sequoyah Hills was a prestigious place where the wealthy used to live.

Cormac McCarthy once said that people used to think we were rich because there were rich people around us. He said we used to live in one or two room huts.

Cormac McCarthy was a highly educated man. He went to St. Mary Parish School and then he went to Knoxville catholic school because his family had to move there. He was a minister at Immaculate Conception Church in Knoxville. As a child Cormac McCarthy was not interested in school and he wanted to pursue his interests.

In 1951, he was admitted to the University of Tennessee to study engineering and physics. He developed an interest in writing when one of his professors asked him to reject a collection of 18th-century essays for inclusion in a textbook. Cormac McCarthy dropped out of college because he developed an interest in the US Air Force.

Then in 1957, he returned to college, and for the first time, he wrote two stories for the student magazine. He wrote two stories called A Drowning Incident and Wake for Susan. In 1959 he finally dropped out of college and moved to Chicago.
