Angry protesters chanting “close the border” taunted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Jerry Nadler and other Democrats on Friday held a Midtown press conference on the Big Apple’s growing immigrant crisis.
New York polls were drowned out by angry shouts as they tried to speak outside the mega-shelter of the Roosevelt Hotel Friday morning.
“Send them back,” Jonathan Rinaldi, a Queens City Council candidate and serial sperm donor, shouted as chaotic scenes unfolded outside the city’s main migrant intake site.
“Close the border, close the border. Respect the AOC constitution. I am your constituent,” shouted a male protester.
At one point, a security guard grabbed Rinaldi, 44, who was screaming and pushed him behind a barricade.
The protesters – brandishing “America first: Checked & legal immigrants only” signs – descended on a hotel on East 45th Street as lawmakers tackled the city’s asylum crisis.
AOC and members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus had just visited an emergency shelter when chaos broke out.

“What we’re trying to do is make sure all the resources are needed and we join the city and the state,” Ocasio-Cortez said before a man holding a megaphone started yelling at her, according to Fox News.
“Illegal immigration is not right! Respect the constitution, close the border,” he shouted.
Ocasio-Cortez tried to continue, listing solutions to the worsening humanitarian crisis.

“I think that there are three points of consensus here that are very important in getting a solution to the issue. The first is that there is a consensus here across geographies and states on increasing federal resources to cities and municipalities that address these issues,” he said.
“The second is to allow work permits so that people here can work and start supporting themselves as soon as possible. They are prevented from getting a job. They are prevented from working and that is part of the pressure on our public system. The sooner people can access the work they’re asking for, legally, the better we can get it done.”
Mayor Eric Adams has repeatedly called on President Biden and the federal government to expedite the permits, insisting the influx of immigrants to the city would “destroy” the Big Apple.

Hizzoner warned earlier this week that a “black market” in migrant jobs had already sprung up across the city as a result of prolonged delays.
Speaking to The Post after the polls dispersed, protester David Rem, 59, pointed out that many immigrants protected by the Big Apple had “jumped” the immigration queue.
“My wife’s children, Diego and Lina, have been waiting for seven years in Medellin, Colombia, to come to this country legally. They have paid all immigration fees and have been fingerprinted by the FBI. They’ve done everything right — they’ve waited and they’re not breaking federal law by crossing the border illegally, so why not them?” he said.

“You know what will happen, they will say to my children in a year from now ‘Diego and Lina, sorry but there is no room for you, the country is full’. It’s a slap in the face to legal migration,” Rem said, holding up a placard that read “99% of these illegal alien asylum petitions are not genuine asylum petitions”.
“From the bottom of my heart, I’m begging Biden to close the border. It’s two years overdue. If you continue to reward people for breaking federal law by crossing the border and coming to New York illegally, it’s not going to stop,” he continued.
Fellow Queens native D’Anna Morgan, 28, agrees.

“It’s not right that these immigrants are jumping ahead of people who have waited years to come to America the right way,” Morgan said, adding that he lives just a few blocks from a sanctuary in Jamaica.
“New York City will resemble a third world country.”
Thousands of migrants have descended on the Roosevelt Hotel since it was made the main arrivals center in May to cope with the relentless influx of asylum seekers into the city.
In July, dozens of immigrants waiting to be processed were forced to sleep on sidewalks surrounding the hotel site when shelters reached capacity.
The city has opened more than 200 emergency sites to accommodate more than 110,000 migrants who have arrived since spring 2022.
