Dad living in Israel recounts relief at learning daughter died: Being kidnapped by Hamas is ‘worse than death’

An Irish father living in Israel said he was relieved to hear the news of his 8-year-old daughter’s death at the hands of Hamas, insisting it was a “blessing” compared to the alternative of her being held and brutally tortured by terrorists.

Thomas Hand recounted the moment he learned of his daughter Emily’s death in an interview on CNN on Wednesday.

“They just said, ‘We found Emily, she’s dead,’ and I said, ‘Yeah,'” he said.

“I answered ‘Yes,’ and smiled because it was the best news of the possibility that I knew. The best possibility I could hope for,” he said.

Hand added that her daughter’s death was better than any other possible situation.

“He’s either dead or in Gaza, and if you know anything about what they’re doing to people in Gaza, that’s worse than death, that’s worse than death,” the grieving father said. “The way they treat you, they don’t have food, they don’t have water.”

“He will be in a dark room with Christ who knows how many people and fear every minute, hour, day and year that may come,” he shouted. “Then death is a blessing, an absolute blessing.”

He said he wasn’t worried when the sirens went off, “until I heard the gunshots.” And it was too late.”

Hand said she was unable to contact her daughter, her friend or her friend’s mother.

Fearing for his life, he ran.

“I had to think about Emily,” Hand said. “He already lost his mother, I can’t risk losing his father too.”

Hand had come to Be’eri 30 years ago as a volunteer, planning to stay just a few months — but he never left.

After his wife, Emily’s mother, died of cancer a few years ago, he and Emily lived alone.

She described her daughter as the tallest in her class, and a talented dancer and singer.

“If I had known … I probably could have run, got him, got his friend, got the mother, got them back to my place,” he said.

“But by the time I realized what was happening, it was too late.”

But it was just one of many kibbutzim attacked by Hamas in recent days, including Kfar Aza — where terrorists beheaded children and babies.
