Derek Hough Says ‘DWTS’ Family Didn’t Know Extent Of Len Goodman’s Illness: ‘A Huge Shock’

More than a month after Len Goodman’s death, his friend and former colleague, Derek Hough, revealed what he knew about Goodman’s health.

It’s no news that the ballroom dancer died days before his 79th birthday after battling bone cancer. Before his death, he spent more than sixteen years as a judge on the ABC show “DWTS.” Given his time on the show, the iconic choreographer and other members are more like family. His friendship with Hough predates their work on the show.

However, Hough recently revealed that while Goodman was struggling with his health, other members of the dance show were barely aware of the severity of the illness.

While speaking with Extra, the 38-year-old pro dancer emotionally opened up about how the news of Goodman’s illness shocked her and the entire “DWTS” family.

“We feel the fragility, but we don’t know how much it is. This was a big surprise for all of us,” explained Hough. “He’s a special man, just a special man. We lost someone special.”

The three-time Primetime Emmy Award winner reminisced about her friendship with the late choreographer, highlighting what the late star meant to her. Hough praised Goodman saying, “She’s pure joy. He. I mean, what he represents and does for the show, for television, for all of us.”

He further spoke about his experience working with the former “Strictly Come Dancing” judge for over sixteen years. Hough stated, “I remember just enjoying every moment with him. And I’m very grateful for that.” Hough then expressed his desire to do something extraordinary for his late friend. He said, “I want to do something to honor him and carry him forward.”

When Goodman died, Hough dedicated a moving tribute to the star. Alongside a clip of her and Goodman laughing and dancing, Hough wrote, “Hold my gaze.” Saddened by the news of our friend and mentor, Len Goodman. It’s a somber morning here in Los Angeles, which seems fitting after this heartbreaking news.”

She added, “But when I think back to the memories we shared with Len, his sense of humor, his smile and his charm, everything feels brighter and full of sunshine. Still hard to fully process but filled with gratitude knowing I had the privilege of working alongside this absolute legend. We will miss you so much, Len. We love you ❤️ Rest In Peace, my friend.”

Other “DWTS” cast members also paid tribute to the late 78-year-old, including Sharna Burgess and Carrie Ann Inaba.

The Late DWTS Judge Seemed To Predict Her Death

Although Goodman did not reveal the details of his health to the members of the reality competition, he apparently predicted his death. During an interview a few months before his death, the English Ballroom dancer revealed how his father died and equated himself with him.

“My father had the right idea. He loved gardening, and he had a stroke while he was in the garden. He’s 79, so if I follow my father’s path, that will be next year.” The dance maestro spoke about his retirement from the dance show to spend more time with his wife, Sue, and grandchildren, Alice and Jack.

Goodman then told his interviewer to draft a small obituary for him. He said, “Just write he’s a dance teacher from Dartford who’s lucky because that’s just about the truth.”

The revelation left many fans wondering if the pro dancer already knew her end, given her health. In 2009, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer which was treated with surgery. He previously spoke to a news channel about his health.

The ballroom dancer said, “I don’t make a fuss about things like that. It’s like when you have a car—you’re always getting it serviced, but even then, you’ll have a problem with your carburetor, and you’ll have to fix it, and eventually, it’ll all go away, and there you go. It’s more about the journey, and mine has been wonderful.”
