Former president Donald Trump made it clear that family comes first before any trial by attending the funeral of his mother-in-law Amalija Knavs.
That means he missed one day of the $10 million defamation trial with E.Jean Carroll.
Trump also, for the third time, slammed Judge Lewis A. Kaplan for denying his request to move the hearing to accommodate the funeral.
In the business mogul’s victory speech at the Iowa caucuses, he praised Knavs and called her “an incredible, beautiful mother.” Knavs, who is survived by her husband, two daughters and grandchildren, was close to Trump during her lifetime and even lived at his estate.

Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, laid their mother, Amalija Knavs, to rest in Florida on Thursday morning. Melania announced last week that Knavs had died after an illness at the age of 78. The family laid it to rest after a service at Bethesda-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Palm Beach.
The photo shared shows Melania looking straight-faced while wearing a black suit and dark sunglasses. He stood with his father, Viktor Knavs, and his 17-year-old son, Barron Trump. They stood by as pallbearers carried Knavs’ casket, covered in beautiful white flowers, into the church, which is not far from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

Trump also posed outside the church, wearing a navy blue suit and black tie. The presidential candidate looked somber as he supported the former first lady at her mother’s funeral.
More members of the Trump family also attended the funeral, including Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner. More guests included Tiffany Trump and Kim Guilfoyle, Donald Trump Jr.’s fiancee.

Trump’s attendance at the funeral meant he missed one day of his libel trial with writer E. Jean Carroll in New York. The trial is to determine how much the former president owes Carroll in damages after being found guilty of sexual abuse and defamation.
Trump had asked for a delay in the hearing to attend the funeral, which Judge Lewis A. Kaplan denied. Since then, he has issued several tirades against the judge, calling him a “bad guy,” a “bad guy,” a “Trump hater,” an “animal” and branding him a “Clinton appointee.”
During a press conference in New York on Wednesday, after a full day in court, he continued to abuse Kaplan for his decision. He said, “And we’re going to assume that for a trial like this, it’s not an emergency in terms of time, the judge is going to be very nice, and they’re going to let me go because I want to be at every day of the trial because I saw what happened on the first one where I was asked not to go by the very lawyer.”

With his mother-in-law’s trial and funeral, Trump hasn’t had the best January, but there has been one recent good thing: he won the Iowa Caucuses on Monday night.
During his victory speech to an excited crowd, the businessman once again praised the Knavs for the impact they had on his life and their family.
He said, “I want to thank my amazing and beautiful mother who passed away a few days ago. And he’s up there, there. He looked down, and he was so proud of us. And I just want to say to Amalija, you are special, one of the most special people I have ever known.”

During Knavs life, he was a very private person but often showed his support for Trump and Melania. She and her husband, Viktor, were occasional visitors to the White House during Trump’s presidency and at official events. Knavs was also present at the launch of Melania’s “Be Your Best” campaign in 2018.
The New York Times reports that Knavs and Viktor became naturalized US citizens that same year. Melania is her parents’ sponsor through the process that allows adults to process green cards and permanent residency for their relatives.
Knavs and her husband raised Melania and her sister, Ines, in Sevnica, a rural industrial town that was once in Communist-controlled Yugoslavia. In the years before his death, the couple lived with Trump, Melania, and their family at the Mar-a-Lago estate.
