Ed Sheeran just announced a new album that hit streams and stores on May 5, but the inspiration for the album came from a few dark days of struggle.
The British singer’s latest post talks about the many challenges she and her family faced last year and how her new album, “Subtract” is “something honest and true to where I am in my adult life.”

In an Instagram post, the 32-year-old singer explained how she’s been working on her latest and upcoming album for years. Just like the previous album, “+”, “x”, and “÷”, his latest album is another mathematical sign, “-” and is called, “Nuclear”.
Writes Sheeran, “I’ve been working on Subtract for a decade, trying to carve out the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what I think it should be. Then at the beginning of 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health, and ultimately the way I looked at music and art.”
Sheeran also explained how songwriting is cathartic for him, and for his latest album, he poured his heart out, saying, “Writing songs is my therapy. It helps me understand my feelings. I write without thinking about what the songs will be, I just write whatever falls. And in just over a week I replaced a decade’s worth of work with my deepest thoughts.”

Sheeran then mentioned everything he had to struggle with, including his wife Cherry Seaborn having a tumor while pregnant with their second child. Wrote the “Bad Habits” singer, “within a month, my pregnant wife was told she had a tumor, with no treatment path until after the birth.”
After he and his wife welcomed their first child, Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran, in August 2020, Cherry became pregnant again in 2021. Fortunately for the singer and his wife, the medical issues seem to be resolved now, as they welcomed their second daughter. , Jupiter Seaborn Sheeran in early 2022.
Sheeran also mentioned the loss, writing, “My best friend Jamal, my brother, passed away suddenly…”
Finally, the copyright trial over the lyrics to Sheeran’s hit song, “Shape of You” also seems to have taken a lot out of him, as he mentioned, “I find myself standing in court defending my integrity and my career as a songwriter.”
