In sitting together Rolling stonesSheeran revealed that he avoided getting involved with drugs again following the death of his friend Edwards in February 2022.

He explained that taking such substances would be “disrespectful” to the memory of his late friend, who died after a heart attack fueled by cocaine and alcohol consumption.

“I will never touch anything again because that is how Jamal died. And it’s disrespectful to his memory to approach him,” Sheeran said of his friend, who supported him as he tried to find a foothold in the music industry, per Daily Mail.

Sheeran has since announced an upcoming single, “Eyes Closed,” dedicated to his friend. Earlier this year, he paid tribute to her with a touching freestyle recorded at the stadium of his favorite club, Stamford Bridge, Chelsea FC.

In his Rolling Stone interview, Sheeran credited his wife, Cherry, as the reason why he stopped taking alcohol and drugs in the first place.

He shared that he had always been involved with alcohol but only started taking “a few” substances at the age of 24. Although he only tried at first, it became a habit, and he sometimes took drugs excessively without alcohol.

Describing the moments as “bad vibes,” Sheeran said realizing he might not be there for his wife, who is pregnant with their first child Lyra, 2, was the wake-up call he needed to “grow up.”

She told the publication, “Two months before Lyra was born, Cherry said, ‘If my water breaks, do you really want someone else to send me to the hospital?'”

“Because I just drank a lot. And that’s when it clicked. I was like, ‘No, actually, I really don’t.’ And I never want to be tricked into holding my child. Ever, ever.”

Cherry is known as the inspiration behind some of the singer’s songs, such as “Shape of You” and “Perfect.”

“I always wake up every day with Cherry, and I’m just like, ‘Why are you with me? You can literally be with whoever you want, and you chose me,” Sheeran said during a 2019 interview with Charlamagne Tha God, per Hollywood life.

“And I said all the things I thought were wrong with me, but you still wanted to be with me. And I think that’s amazing.”

The award-winning artist plans to release his upcoming album “–” (pronounced as Tolak) on May 5. In an Instagram post on March 1, Sheeran shared that he had been working on the project for a decade because he wanted to make sure that the final piece was “the perfect acoustic album.”

However, due to the challenges he faced in 2022 – Edwards’ death, his wife’s tumor diagnosis, and a copyright claim over his song “Shape Of You” – he completely reworked the album to reflect his “deepest, darkest thoughts”.

He added, “As an artist, I don’t feel like I can put credible work into the world that doesn’t accurately represent where I am and how I need to express myself at this point in my life. This album is just that. It opened a trap door into my soul. For the first time, I’m not trying to make an album that people like, I’m just putting out something that’s honest and true to where I am in my adult life.”
