Ellie Kemper and Jon Hamm go way back. Long before sharing the TV screen together on “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” the two actors actually had a relationship made in high school.
During a recent episode of Andy Cohen’s “Deep and Shallow” podcast, Kemper talked about how he first met Hamm as a teenager.

While chatting with Cohen, Kemper, 43, recalled her freshman year when Hamm was her drama teacher.
“So, he is 10 years older than me. He went to my high school, to give people some background, he went to my high school, went to college, came back and taught drama for a year at our high school. And he is the youngest teacher so far. He doesn’t look bad and he teaches drama,” Kemper told Cohen. “He actually looks great. Thoughtful.”
“The Office” actress explained how the two reconnected years after her drama class.
“Jon Hamm is a generous, selfless man. I called him when I was performing alone. A bit of a comedy show. I have my little suitcase,” he continued. “I was doing this one-man show in Los Angeles, and at the time, he was already famous on ‘Mad Men.’”

Kemper ended up emailing Hamm, 52, from their high school directory to tell him about the show he was doing and invite him to the event.
“I said, ‘Hey, I’m doing this show. I know you’re really busy, but it would be great if you could come,'” he said. “And he came, and that’s when I really reconnected with him.”

The two later got the chance to share the TV screen together in the hit Netflix original show, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” where he played the role of Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne who kept Kemper’s character locked in a bunker for years.
“When they told us he was going to play the priest, it was great,” Kemper said during a Television Critics Association panel in 2015. “But I was a little scared. I think there’s still a dynamic teacher, and acting with him was quite a thrill because I think he’s still judging me on some level. But he’s a great guy and it’s a lot of fun.”

Back in 2013 during an interview with Entertainment WeeklyKemper and Hamm discuss the high school relationship of St. Louis them.
“You’re in ninth grade and this is a class that has everyone from ninth graders to seniors in it — so you’re on the young end of the spectrum, but I remember you being really good,” Hamm told Kemper.
“Do you remember being really good or do you remember thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, this is something I’m going to do?’”
Kemper replied, “That was very generous of you – I don’t remember very well, but I remember enjoying it very much, and I didn’t try to kiss you. I think that’s a credit to you and [John Burroughs School theater chair] Mr. Wayne Salomon, because you may like something, but when you have a great teacher, you like him even more.”
