The House GOP’s newly announced impeachment inquiry into President Biden scared the bejesus out of Senator John Fetterman.
Not really.
“Oh God, is it true? Oh my gosh, it’s devastating,” Fetterman (D-Pa.) said with a slight laugh Tuesday when asked about the news. “Oooh, don’t do it, please don’t do it.”
Dressed in the button-down shirt and oversized shorts famous for the congressional corridors, the Pennsylvania senator made it clear that he was not taking the investigation seriously.
Fetterman, who was diagnosed with speech and auditory processing problems after a stroke in May 2022, seemed clear in his answers.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) announced Tuesday that he is directing a House committee to begin an impeachment inquiry into Biden.
“House Republicans have revealed serious and credible allegations of President Biden’s conduct” in foreign business dealings involving his family, including his son Hunter, McCarthy said. “Together, these allegations reflect a culture of corruption.

“Through our investigation, we found that President Biden lied to the American people about his own knowledge of his family’s foreign business dealings,” he added.
McCarthy’s announcement appeared to derail an earlier public commitment he made to hold a floor vote to begin any impeachment inquiry.
He told Breitbart earlier this month, “If we move forward with the impeachment inquiry, it will happen through a vote on the floor of the House of Representatives and not through a declaration by one person.”

The speaker also previously criticized her predecessor, Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), for starting an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump without a floor vote.
Since then, a handful of State Legislators have come out against the impeachment inquiry against Biden.
McCarthy later maintained a clear face telling reporters that “Pelosi has changed the rules of the House [and] We just follow.”
This is what the impeachment inquiry into the Biden family business scandal looks like
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy launched an impeachment inquiry Tuesday into President Biden — challenging congressional powers to obtain documents and testimony about Biden’s role in his family’s foreign business dealings while he was vice president.
House Republicans have already issued multiple demands to executive branch agencies related to Joe Biden’s involvement with eldest son Hunter Biden and first brother James Biden’s international affairs — in many cases setting a September deadline that could soon turn into litigation.

This investigation aims to answer several questions:
What was in Vice President Joe Biden’s email?
While vice president, Joe Biden used the pseudonyms “Robert L. Peters” and “Robin Ware” to communicate with staff members — leaving a paper trail of nearly 5,400 written records.
The House Oversight Committee demanded the communication from the National Archives by an Aug. 31 deadline, but sources told The Post the agency did not comply.
What do Hunter Biden’s bank records show?
Congressional Republicans are preparing to issue subpoenas to banks for accounts held by Hunter and James Biden — after previously subpoenaing several associated bank statements.
The records could show whether any money was transferred to Joe Biden from his relatives’ foreign income streams and also whether they covered most of his expenses. It’s also possible that the House will seek the president’s bank records as well.

Both Biden and the White House have torn apart GOP accusations of wrongdoing by the president.
“House Republicans have been investigating the president for nine months, and they have shown no evidence of wrongdoing,” White House spokesman Ian Sams said.
“[McCarthy’s] members of the GOP themselves have said so. He vowed to hold a vote to open the impeachment, now he is flip-flopping because he has no support — extreme politics at its worst,” he added.

On the House side, Republicans generally cheered the development.
Rep. Ken Buck (R-Col.), who has been vocal against impeachment investigations in the past, called McCarthy’s move a “good idea” because it sidesteps a “distraction” for Republicans as they contemplate the fight to shut down the government. according to an NBC reporter.

“Republicans must unite around the impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden. The American people deserve to know the truth about his decades of corruption,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) posted on social media.
Freedom Caucus Chairman Scott Perry (R-Penn.) chimed in, “I think the impeachment inquiry is long overdue.”
He later insisted that the prosecution itself “cannot be done for political reasons.” An investigation differs from a formal prosecution in that it is merely an investigative step.
On the Senate side, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) balked.
“I do not have any advice to give to the House. They have a completely different set of challenges,” he said. “So I think the best advice for the Senate is to do our job and we’ll see how this goes.”
Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), slammed the investigation as a “witch hunt.”
“I sympathize with Speaker McCarthy. He is in a difficult position. But sometimes you have to tell these people who are way off the deep end,” Schumer said. “They can’t go on.”
With the impeachment inquiry, congressional Republicans find themselves with additional weapons to subpoena witnesses and documents in their investigation.
McCarthy himself has publicly sought Biden’s bank records.
The speaker has faced intense pressure from his right wing to launch an investigation as he adjusts to a budget fight — with just 11 days on the congressional calendar until the government shutdown in early October.
The House convened on Tuesday after a six-week recess.
