Florida chemistry student caught on camera injecting opioid ‘chemical agent’ under neighbor’s door

A Florida chemistry student caught on a neighbor’s hidden camera allegedly injected an opioid ‘chemical agent’ under their front door, sickening the family and their newborn, according to police.

Umar Abdullah and his pregnant wife moved into their new condo in Tampa in June 2022 and were warmly welcomed by the other residents of the building.

Soon after, however, Abdullah began receiving texts from his disgruntled downstairs neighbor, Xuming Li, a seemingly “normal guy” who complained of losing sleep and hearing the toilet seat moving, he told WFLA.

After months of fighting, Abdullah said he, his wife and their daughter started feeling dizzy and vomiting.

“I saw my daughter,” Abdullah told the outlet. “His eyes were full of tears. He wasn’t crying, but his eyes were full of tears.”

A friend first noticed the chemical smell when picking up a package for Abdullah while he and his family were on vacation. When she returned, she said she noticed a smell she described as more “obnoxious” than nail polish remover.

He called the air conditioning company, who found no problem. Then he called a plumber who also found nothing wrong with the water heater, where the smell seemed to be coming from. The landlord had replaced the heater and he had also cleaned the air ducts and vents — but the chemical smell persisted.

Abdullah also called the fire department, but again, their tests revealed nothing.

“I never thought after this that it wasn’t,” said Abdullah. “I just imagined this. No.”

But then, convinced there was an issue, he said he “started sniffing the place like a dog.” When he looked in his doorway, he found a small crack in the corner. Suspecting his neighbor Yi may have something to do with his family’s illness, he installs a hidden camera outside.

When Abdullah’s daughter fell ill again, she checked footage that showed Yi crouching outside her door — but it wasn’t clear what her neighbor was doing.

“We’re shaking,” Abdullah told WFLA. “We couldn’t imagine that he would come and do something.”

He adjusted the angle of the hidden camera and when his daughter got sick again, he checked the footage.

This time, the video shows Yi taking out a syringe, filling it with liquid, then injecting the liquid into a gap in Abdullah’s door frame, according to WFLA.

Abdullah immediately took his family out of the house and called the police.

Li was arrested by Tampa police and charged with several felony charges, including possession of a controlled dangerous substance and burglary.

Hazmat testing revealed the “liquid chemical agent” contained a combination of methadone and hydrocodone – both opioid pain medications.

He was released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 5.

He separately faces lawsuits from Abdullah for domestic violence and from the condo association for breach of contract.

Abdullah’s daughter just celebrated her first birthday in the apartment — but she said she wants to move her family elsewhere.
