Genius toddler sets world record — becomes youngest female Mensa member

A Kentucky toddler – who started reading at age 2 – has become the youngest female Mensa member, earning her a place in the Guinness World Records.

Isla McNabb earned her place in the nonprofit Mensa International society — which is open to people who score in the 98th percentile or higher on a standard IQ test — after scoring in the 99th percentile for her age on the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, according to an announcement by Guinness World Records on Monday.

The child genius – who is now three years old – began to show his potential since his parents brought him home from the hospital because he was able to focus so much.

The child prodigy learned colors, numbers and the alphabet at the age of one and at just seven months old could “pick out specific items from a picture book when asked,” his dad Jason McNabb told Guinness.

And when her dad spelled out the word “red” on Isla’s erasable writing tablet from her aunt on her second birthday, she surprised her parents by reading the word, Jason said.

The father then wrote “blue,” “yellow,” “cat,” and “dog” – all of which the girl could easily read.

Parents also found lying around the house toy letters that spelled objects placed nearby — such as looking for CHAIR spelled next to the chair, SOFA placed next to the sofa and PAINT placed near their pet cat Booger.

So Amanda’s mother suggested their daughter take the test and at 2 and a half years old she got a place in the world’s oldest and most prestigious high IQ society.

“The biggest benefit to Mensa is the community,” says Jason, explaining that they’ve been able to get advice from other parents of gifted children about the best resources to keep their kids challenged.

While Isla is currently in preschool, her parents are working to get her an individualized education program so she can start kindergarten early.

“Isla thinks she’s on par with adults, and it can be challenging,” Jason said.

“He was never satisfied with ‘because I said so,'” his father said.

She added that while they were able to spell things out when they needed to keep something from their other children, that trick didn’t work with Isla.

“If I ask her mom ‘Hey, should we get ICECREA-M’, Isla will be happy and yell ‘ice cream!’” explained Jason.

The smart girl continues to surprise her parents with her knowledge — including showing Jason and Amanda American Sign Language.

And parents often don’t know where Isla picked up the things she does know, Jason said.

“He often mispronounces words that we can only assume he learned by reading,” Jason said, giving the example of the child pronouncing germs with G.

Although Isla is strong in many subjects and takes pride in learning, she excels in math and reading.

Jason said he was delighted to see Isla make it into the Guinness World Records and can’t wait to see what opportunities await her.

“He’s accomplished a lot in his three years,” Jason said. “I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
