The recently released GQ “Man of the Year” list has sparked heated debate on social media over what some claim is gender misrepresentation and marginalization.
The list, which traditionally celebrates the achievements of outstanding individuals in the year under review, came under fire because more than half of this year’s awardees for the UK edition were women.

In the UK list, 11 female stars are featured for the honor out of 20. They include Simone Rocha, girl group Flo, Emily Maitlis, Bianca Saunders, Yomi Adegoke, Lucy Prebble, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Jasmine Jobson, Molly Manning Walker, Mary Earps and Jenni Hermoso.

Reality TV star and famous entrepreneur Kim Kardashian caused a stir on social media after branding herself GQ’s “Man Of The Year” in Instagram and Twitter posts.
The SKIMS founder shared a photo of himself in an androgynous suit and tie for the cover spread of GQ’s Men Of The Year edition. He wrote in the caption, “Hi! I’m GQ’s Man of the Year!” Many fans took to the comments section to express their confusion about her post.
The “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” alum is one of three cover stars for the magazine’s US edition. The other two cover stars are Jacob Elordi and rapper Travis Scott.
The 43-year-old reality star, who was branded Tycoon of the Year after launching menswear SKIMS, is the first woman to cover the annual edition with Rihanna, Megan Thee Stallion, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Aniston and Scarlett Johansson also gracing previous editions.
The post has sparked controversy, with many criticizing Kardashian for appropriating a title reserved for men.

Fans and critics are using X, formerly known as Twitter, to voice their opinions on the list of honorees for this year’s event. Many X users voiced their anger and frustration over a roster filled with female stars for a title traditionally associated with men.
One wrote, “No one reads GQ or US weekly, so they need this kind of outrage for clicks and views. The men won Best Woman, and the women won Best Man. It means nothing; they’re just looking for a connection.”
Another fan tweeted, “There are only 2 genders. Man and women. I can only see one woman here. Not a man.”
“It’s not funny when they replace men with women and it’s not funny when women replace men,” shared a third individual.

Who Are The Male Stars Honored By GQ?

While the GQ Men Of The Year list has sparked controversy over its gender representation, it’s worth mentioning that the list also features some men who have had incredible years so far.
One of the men receiving the honor was Rema, a Nigerian singer and songwriter who rose to prominence in 2023 and gained international acclaim for his unique blend of Afrobeats, trap and pop music, especially with his hit song, “Calm.”
Another man’s name on the list is Gary Lineker, the former English footballer turned TV presenter. Other male tributes include Jack Antonoff, Black Coffee, David Jonsson, Lev Tanju & Gareth Skewis, Malcolm Kamulete, Paapa Essiedu and Paul Mullin.
