Greta Gerwig Was ‘Terrified’ About Working On New ‘Barbie’ Movie: ‘Could Be A Career-Ender’

Popular director Greta Gerwig has revealed how she feels about directing the upcoming live-action “Barbie” movie.

While several animated versions of “Barbie” have been released over the years, the upcoming film will be the first of its kind when it hits theaters in July 2023.

Appearing on Dua Lipa’s “At Your Service” podcast, Gewrwig shared that the size of the project scared her and made her wonder if the end result could affect her career.

The director said that having help from Martell, who owns the Barbie franchise, and his co-producers, actors Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley, helped make the production easier. Robbie plays the title role in the film, which also stars Ryan Gosling and a brilliant ensemble.

During an appearance on Dua Lipa’s “At Your Service” podcast, Gerwig discussed her concerns about directing the upcoming live-action “Barbie” movie.

“It was very scary. I think that’s a big part of it,” he told his host on Friday, per Entertainment Weekly.

The filmmaker’s comments appeared to refer to his concern over not being able to execute the project, which was the first of its kind.

He added, recalling the early days of preproduction, “I think there’s something about starting from that place where it’s like, ‘Okay, anything is possible!’ It felt like vertigo starting to write it. Like, where do you start? What’s the story?”

In the end, Gerwig overcame her fear and went ahead with what was necessary. He worked with Noah Baumbach on the film’s first script and then began production in March after all actors had been signed.

While on a podcast with Dua Lipa, Gerwig revealed that the film helped push her out of her comfort zone, saying that she eventually turned her fear into strength to bring the popular toy franchise to the big screen.

He said, “The feeling I have is knowing that it’s going to be really exciting violence. That’s usually where it’s best,” he shared. “When you’re like, ‘I’m afraid of that.’ Anything you’re like, ‘This could be career-ending,’ then you’re like, ‘Ok, I might have to do it.’”

He also praised the efforts of the American toy company Mattel, which owns the toy franchise, revealing that they gave him everything he needed to succeed.

“Mattel is an incredible partner who has given us such trust and freedom, and I think that’s very rare,” Gerwig added. “Whatever we wanted, they didn’t try to micromanage it. They were completely partners, and that was amazing.”

One of the ways Mattel supports Gerwig is by giving her access to the full Barbie archive so she can run free with her imagination to create a unique version that will blow the minds of audiences when it appears.

Gerwig shared that Robbie, who stars in and co-produces the upcoming film, also helped with this. He also mentioned Ackerley as another producer who was a great support throughout.

“They really gave us their trust,” he said, referring to Mattel’s unwavering support. “And I think a big reason for that is actually Margot and Tom [Ackerley] and the way they also, you know, said, ‘We want to make this movie, and we want to make the vision. We don’t need to make any Barbie movies. We want to make this one.’”

‘Barbie’ Cast And Crew

In “Barbie,” Gerwig, Robbie and Ackerley are joined in the production crew by Robbie Brenner, David Heyman, Ynon Kreiz and Josey McNamara.

Robbie plays the title character while “The Gray Man” star Ryan Gosling portrays Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend. The couple was joined by a list of other Hollywood stars, including Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Connor Swindells, Alexandra Shipp, and Rhea Perlman.

Showrunners Warner Bros. has kept the storyline a secret. However, it is expected that Gerwig’s adaptation will feature different variations of Barbie and Ken, which will be played by other characters besides Robbie and Gosling.

There is no trailer for the film yet; however, Warner Bros. shared the first photo of Robbie as Barbie at CinemaCon earlier this year. The film will hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
