Meet Guillermo Söhnlein, Co-Founder of The OceanGate
When Guillermo Söhnlein, co-founder of OceanGate, realized that debris had been found while hunting for the missing Titan, he was caught on camera in shock. When a BBC reporter interrupts their interview to announce that the search team has found a debris field on the surface of the sea, businessman Guillermo is visibly shaken.
“I’m sorry … has it somewhat been found?” asked Guillermo. “I’m not sure [what the debris is] because I heard this for the first time, but I know that the protocol for lost communication is for the pilot to display the sub. From the beginning, I always wondered what that might be [CEO Stockton Rush] will do it.”
In 2009, Guillermo and Stockton founded OceanGate Expeditions.
Although he left the business ten years ago, Guillermo often expressed his admiration and faith in his co-founder after the 22-foot Titan, carrying Rush and four other passengers, mysteriously disappeared Sunday morning while en route to the Titanic wreck.
“If anything, I think we need to go back and learn from what happened, find out what happened, take that lesson, and take it forward,” Guillermo described the loss of the submarine and the frantic search that followed.
The Titanic, which lies 370 miles off the coast of Newfoundland and sank at a depth of 12,500 feet, was found to have wreckage found 1,600 feet from its bow hours after the BBC interview of the OceanGate co-founder. According to officials, the findings indicate that the submarine suffered a “catastrophic explosion” that instantly killed everyone on board.
“I think I have broken them with good logic and engineering behind me,” Guillermo defended Stockton to the BBC. “[The] The human drowning community globally is very small.”
“Developing innovation and any new technology, including diving materials, means that sometimes you have to step out of the balance of the regulatory scheme,” he argued. “But the bottom line is that everyone has a different opinion about how submarines should be designed, how dives should be conducted, how expeditions should be conducted.”
“The challenge, however, is that with all of us having opinions none of us have all the facts. So it is difficult to form this opinion,” explained Guillermo. He also expressed his admiration for Rush, saying he was “probably one of the smartest people. [he has] meet.”
“The biggest thing I’ve always admired [Rush] is a healthy respect for risk and a healthy respect for the dangers of the deep ocean,” he added. “Everything we do is always focused on managing that risk.”
