Gymnast Nastia Liukin didn’t get the reaction she might have expected from her bikini.
Over the past week, the retired Russian-born American gymnast has been sharing several photos and videos of her enjoying her vacation in Maui in one colorful bikini after another.
However, given the tragedy that Hawaii is currently facing due to the wildfires raging in Maui, many felt that it was “insensitive” and even “classless” for him to post the photo and take away resources that should be given to the people of Hawaii instead of tourists.

One Instagram post that caught a lot of attention from social media was a carousel she posted containing footage of her posing on a cliff by the sea. She wore a wide-brimmed hat, reflective sunglasses, a tropical-print bikini and water shoes, which she complained “ruined” her appearance.
In the caption, she wrote, “When your boyfriend makes you wear ‘water shoes’ to rock climb out of the kindness of his heart / for my safety… but then has to listen to me complain all day about how they ruined my looks.” Although he was probably joking, many thought it was bad, especially considering how many families on Maui lost their homes, their businesses and many of their possessions.

The comments on this Instagram post were as savage as expected. “Hey, Nastia, a bunch of people just lost everything in a fire in Hawaii. Get over yourself and your little problems,” commented one user. “I can’t believe you’re posting this now. I’m so shocked at how insensitive you are,” another follower agreed.
“Are you in Hawaii? Will you all be able to volunteer and help? I’ve seen a lot of locals say if you don’t help, please go home,” another user wrote. While some fans noted that he was on another island, not Maui, others felt that it didn’t make a difference.

“We’re really telling you all to go home and stop trying to vacation to Hawai’i during the greatest natural disaster in US History. We need all the hotel rooms, condos and vacation rentals on all the islands to house the 15,000 people displaced by the loss of everything. Go home,” wrote another follower.
Another netizen called Nastia “insensitive, selfish and classless,” adding, “We are so angry that visitors like you keep coming here when we beg you to stay away. We don’t need your tourism; stop talking about things which you have no experience.”

“We know what we need, and it’s up to you to leave and stay out so that Hawaiians who have just lost everything can use those rooms and hotels as shelters on their own land while this natural disaster is cleaned up,” they continued. . “You’re on any island just taking a spot from someone who needs it.”
“To anyone reading this, don’t take a vacation to Hawai’i just yet. Please respect the community. Despite the backlash, there were a few who defended her decision to vacation in Hawaii despite the tragedy. “Whoever reads this. Tourists are still welcome to visit all islands except Maui now. I apologize for the negative comments from people who spread misinformation,” commented one user. “Seriously! @nastialiukin is not responsible for the fire. Anyone who treats her like she’s less because she came on vacation,” another fan agreed.

Her personal trainer, Kira Stokes, focused more on her shoes, writing, “NO ONE can make water shoes look better… the vibe we all strive for.” She then tagged Nastia’s boyfriend, Ben Weyand, writing that he “knew what happened.”
It seems Nastia may be trying to distance herself from the controversy by sharing another video in her hotel room showing her teasing a bikini under a see-through brown dress while declaring herself a “beach cowboy.” The video can be seen here.
