Harrowing video captures base jumper leaping 29 stories to his death as parachute fails to open

Chilling video captures a British daredevil unwittingly jumping to his death when his parachute failed to open during a base jump from a 29-storey building in Thailand.

Nathy Odinson, 33, who posted a video of his stunt on social media, scaled a building in the beach resort of Pattaya on Saturday night, the Daily Mirror reported.

A friend caught him smiling as he checked and adjusted his gear, including a camera he realized wasn’t recording, so he took off his helmet to push the button.

Odinson then checked his chute, saying, “Three, two, one, see you!” — and took the decisive plunge.

In the shocking video, he can be heard hitting a tree and landing on the ground after the green chute he was holding failed to deploy.

Paramedics confirmed he was dead and an investigation into the tragic accident was launched. Police suggested the parachute was simply “malfunctioning”, while Odison’s brother blamed “user error.”

UK criminal Nathy Odinson, 33, was seen moments before he was killed when his parachute failed to deploy during a base jump in Thailand.

Kanet Chansong, 33, a security guard who was nearby during the incident, said: “I heard the sound of a tree and I thought it was a fallen branch hitting the ground.”

“A woman screamed so I walked over and realized it was someone. They have died. I saw that they had jumped from the building,” added Chansong, according to The Mirror.

He said Odinson had jumped from the building several times before.

“They make video content for social media. They have done this before and they know it is not allowed,” said Chansong.

Lt. Police Kamolporn Nadee said that the parachute was “not working” and was being examined.

“He was in a bad condition when we arrived,” said the policeman,

“The friend who recorded the video of him jumping was questioned and the video was examined as evidence. Forensic officers are investigating the case further.”

The British Embassy in Bangkok has been informed of the tragedy and is contacting Nathy’s family in the UK.

“We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Thailand,” a Foreign Office spokesman said.

Odinson’s brother Ed Harrison, 39, told The Sun that the horrifying video showed how the pilot’s small chute got stuck in his harness.

He said “user error” easily led to the tragedy.

“Looking at the video, any skydiver will immediately tell you what’s wrong,” Harrison told the outlet.

“When he stood up, he was holding a white mini-parachute called a pilot’s chute that had a strap to the main chute, which was the bridle,” he said. “You throw the pilot chute into the relative wind flow and that puts the main chute in its bag on the back.

“What you can clearly see is that the bridle is routed through the harness so there’s no way it could open the main chute,” Harrison told The Sun.

“It was a simple mistake that he made without realizing it. He seemed in a hurry which is a bad thing, probably worried that someone might have stopped the jump,” he said.

“It was a very simple thing and you could see he had tried to fix the bridle but he didn’t look and no one else was checking for him. Base jumping is dangerous because you don’t have a second chance,” said the brother.

“The rig was inspected after his death by a professional rigger and it was in good condition. There is no problem with the kit,” he added.

Harrison said his brother has more than 500 jumps under his belt from around the world.

“He has jumped to America, Spain, New Zealand, Thailand and the Philippines and has made friends in all those places,” he said.

“He’s fun-loving and cheerful and great with children. He is a hero to my three children. They talk to him regularly while I make video calls every day. They still can’t believe this is true,” said Harrison.

He noted that the Odinson had used the same chute as Rowan Atkinson’s character in the 2011 James Bond parody “Johnny English Reborn” – and even still had the word “peeping” on it.

Harrison said another skydiver who worked as a consultant on the film gave his brother a chute about a year ago.

Base jumping comes from the acronym BASE, which stands for four categories of fixed objects from which one can jump: buildings, antennas, spans and earth.

This sport is much more dangerous than skydiving because the skydiver has only a few seconds to act in the event of a problem and usually has no backup.
