‘Harry Potter’ Star Robbie Coltrane’s Cause Of Death Revealed

Actor Robbie Coltrane died at the age of 72 on Friday, October 14.

The Scottish actor is best known for starring as Hogwarts gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid in the “Harry Potter” film franchise, starting with “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” in 2001. He also had roles in two “James Bond” films and the popular series “Crackers”.

At the time of his death, his agent released a statement saying that he had been suffering from health problems for the past few years and died in a hospital near his home in Scotland. Over the weekend, more information about the cause of his death was revealed by several UK outlets.

According to multiple UK reports, Robbie Coltrane died of multiple organ failure (via Deadline). The death certificate also stated that he had suffered from sepsis, a lower respiratory tract infection, and heart block. Coltrane was also diagnosed with obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

Many “Harry Potter” stars took to social media shortly after his death to pay tribute to their late costar. Actor Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter himself, released a statement shortly after his death.

“Robbie is one of the funniest people I’ve ever met and always made us laugh as kids on set. I have fond memories of him keeping our spirits up for the Prisoner of Azkaban, when we were all hiding from the pouring rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he told stories and jokes to keep our spirits up,” he said. “I feel very lucky to have met and worked with him and very sad that he has passed away. He is an amazing actor and a beautiful man.”

Actor Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley, posted a screenshot of Hagrid from the first film on Instagram.

“I am heartbroken to hear that Robbie is gone. I will never forget the smell of cigars and beard glue- a beautiful combination,” he wrote. “No one else on the planet can play Hagrid, only Robbie.”

“Just like Hagrid in the books and movies Robbie in life – warm, compassionate and funny. A man with a giant heart who still watches over us even decades later,” he continued. “Conveying love to his family. See you on the other side of Bobser.”

Actress Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Granger, also took to Instagram to pay her respects in a heartfelt message on her Instagram Stories. “Robbie was like the funnest uncle I ever had, but most importantly, he was so caring and compassionate towards me as a child and as an adult,” she wrote. “His talent is so great that it makes sense he’s playing a giant – he can fill ANY space with his brilliance.”

“Robbie, if I’m ever as nice as you were to me on a movie set, I promise I’ll do it in your name and memory,” he continued. “Know how much I adore and admire you. I will miss your sweetness, your nicknames, your warmth, your laughter, and your hugs. You make us a family. Know you are like that to us.”
