Heather Armstrong grew up in a strict Mormon family. But he was never meant for religion — which led him to prefer love and drinking. Surprisingly, when his parents found out about it, despite being discouraged at first, they finally accepted him as he was and their bond became stronger than ever.

Heather Armstrong was born to her parents, Linda Hamilton and Mike Hamilton. They raised him outside of Memphis, TN, in a strict Mormon family. Not surprisingly, she got A’s in high school, served as seminary president, and captained the volleyball team. His dream was to become US attorney general, and for that, he moved to Utah in 1993 on an academic scholarship to Brigham Young University.
But during college, Heather began to find herself. So, instead of going to law school, he moved to Los Angeles and became a Web designer. And because he always wanted to write, he created the Dooce blog in February 2001. There, he initially wrote about “anything and everything as widely and extravagantly” as he wanted.
That same year, days after 9/11, he later posted a blog called “Drunken diatribe” that included comments about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his parents. It was a blog she never expected her parents to read because her dad never used the Internet, and her mom didn’t know how to turn on a computer.
But thanks to his brother, they got a copy. “They know my way of life but they’ve never confronted it,” Heather said. “It kind of throws it in their face.”
After that, his father did not speak to him for three months and his mother was very sad.
Obviously, Heather was also embarrassed and she removed the post.
Fortunately, with time, Heather and her parents mend their relationship.
But with one problem comes again. Linda is now suffering from suicidal depression. She also stopped taking her medication once she got pregnant. Then followed her divorce from her husband, alcoholism, being fired from her job, and more.
“I have a lot to be happy about, but there’s something blocking me inside,” he said at the time.
Finally, just when things were looking good, Linda relapsed after being sober for over 18 months in May 2023, and killed herself!

Linda Hamilton is Heather Armstrong’s loving mother. The late blogger even wrote an entire book about his mother’s “divinity”. “I will never underestimate her goodness for the sake of all of us who deserve a mother like her,” he said on Mother’s Day 2020.

Linda Hamilton was born on April 12, 1945. That makes her 78 years old in 2023.
On Linda’s 76th birthday, Heather took to her IG to dedicate a poem to her. Part of it reads, “I bit into an apple, And it tasted like Oz, All because, He asked if I was going. Doesn’t he know, I’m chained with fire, A trickster, Locked in a doorless cellar.”
A graduate of Western Kentucky University, Linda Hamilton works as a Director of Sales at Avon.
He is also an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he often speaks about how parents can maintain relationships with children who have left the faith. “Do I hope he’s still active in the Mormon faith? Of course, I do. But he didn’t and I accepted him as he was,” Linda once said.
Now that Heather is gone, Linda talks more about her daughter. “I don’t think he wears his heart on his sleeve. ‘But he has a wonderful gift of wisdom. He can see what people need,” said Linda. “Our family is devastated, but we believe that we will see him again,” he said.
