Here are the top 10 deadliest national parks, according to research

If you visited a national park last year, you’ll be among the hundreds of millions of people across the US who venture outdoors to capture spectacular views or enjoy recreational activities like hiking or skiing.

And while the tranquil landscape of our national park features many mountainous landscapes, pristine beaches and lush forests, there are some deadly risks associated with visiting.

Recently, outdoor clothing brand KÜHL looked at different criteria and came up with a top 10 list of the deadliest national parks.

The company said it examined data linked to the number of deaths, missing people, search and rescue missions, park ranger presence, proximity to hospitals, trail warnings and visitor data to come up with the list.

KÜHL said some of the factors that made the national park rank higher on the list were due to the higher number of deaths and search and rescue missions or inaccessibility to hospitals.

Here are the 10 deadliest national parks according to KÜHL.

1. Grand Canyon National Park

KÜHL said Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona ranked highest, with 1 in 503,000 people at risk of dying there. Since 2007, 165 people have died in the Grand Canyon, according to the company.

1. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

Tied for first place is Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in Alaska. KÜHL said the probability of dying there is 1 in 126,000 because the national park has some of the largest volcanoes and glaciers.

3. Isle Royale National Park

Isle Royale National Park in Michigan is a remote island cluster and ranks third on KÜHL’s list of least safe national parks. The company said it had a 1 in 163,000 chance of dying there.

4. North Cascades National Park

North Cascades National Park in Washington State is the fourth most dangerous national park in America for hiking or camping. Despite its pristine beauty, deep forested valleys, waterfalls and glaciers, there is a 1 in 18,000 chance of dying there.

5. Dry Tortugas National Park

Coming in fifth place is Dry Tortugas National Park in Florida. The national park offers clear blue water and abundant marine life, but safety precautions should be taken while visiting. KÜHL says people who visit national parks have a 1 in 184,000 chance of dying there.

7. Denali National Park

Another national park in Alaska, Denali National Park, ranks seventh on the list. KÜHL says the probability of death is 1 in 119,000.

Kings Canyon National Park in California is number eight on the list. According to data from KÜHL, 1 in 220,000 may lose their life in the park.

10. Mount Rainier National Park

Washington State’s Mount Rainier National Park is at the bottom of the list in tenth place. The mountain has stunning views of the surrounding area, but the national park has a 1 in 317,000 chance of death.

KÜHL emphasized that although the list indicates the park is dangerous, “danger” only indicates a higher exposure to risk rather than inherent safety.

The company said that the average chance of dying in a national park is about 1 in 664,099, which is lower than walking on the road, as the chance of dying in a road accident is 1 in 485.
