Israeli diplomat’s crying son, 19, ‘intentionally’ ran over Florida cop with motorcycle, may avoid charges due to dad’s immunity: lawyer

The teenage son of an Israeli diplomat is accused of deliberately driving his motorcycle into Florida police because he “hated waiting in traffic,” but the charges could be dropped because of his father’s immunity, according to his lawyer.

Avraham Gil, 19, is seen crying hysterically in his mugshot after he was arrested for beating a Sunny Isles Beach police lieutenant shortly after 3:30 p.m. Jan. 27.

The lieutenant was conducting a traffic stop on Collins Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares on Miami’s barrier island, when he saw Gil cross traffic and yelled at the teenager to stop, according to WPLG.

As police signaled for Gil to stop, the teenager reportedly continued riding and “intentionally hit him.”

The officer suffered “incapacitating” injuries to his left leg, but pulled Gil off his bike and took him to the ground, according to the outlet.

Gil, who lives in Aventura, was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence, both felonies, according to court records seen by The Post.

Gil’s father, Eli Gil, is consul for administration at the Israeli Consulate in Miami.

Gil told officers he weaved through vehicles because he “hated waiting behind traffic,” according to the Miami New Times, citing a police report.

Because of his father’s diplomatic status, attorney Avraham Gil argued that the teenager’s charges should be dropped because they claim Miami-Dade law does not apply to him.

“Family members who form part of a diplomatic agent’s household enjoy the same privileges and immunities as the sponsoring diplomatic agent,” according to the US State Department’s “Diplomatic and Consular Immunities.”

Among the privileges agents receive is complete immunity from the criminal jurisdiction of host country courts, and they cannot be prosecuted regardless of offense unless that immunity is “waived by the sending country”.

However, according to a legal analyst, immunity may not be granted to Gil because of his father’s diplomatic nature.

“Diplomatic immunity is not given to people who are called consular officers, and they are people who are not the chief diplomatic agents of foreign countries here in the United States, so there is a difference,” David Weinstein told Local 10.

Saturday’s arrest was not Gil’s first time interacting with law enforcement in the Miami area.

He was involved in at least two other offenses, including at one point fleeing from police when they tried to pull him and his bike over.

In newly released body camera footage, a policeman flashes his lights on January 14 to stop a motorcyclist, believed to be Gil. The bicyclist took off and police officers did not pursue him, as Miami Shores policy is not to pursue anyone for traffic violations, according to the outlet.

Gil was also stopped on Dec. 31 in Miami Shores for several traffic violations and told the officer that his father was a diplomat for Israel, which led to a phone call to his parents.

During the New Year’s Eve stop, Gil’s motorcycle featured a vanity plate that read “PLS CHASE,” hidden by a second, upside-down plate.

The officer who was allegedly run over by Gil is still off duty due to his injuries.

Gil appeared in court following his arrest with a look of zero emotion, a stark contrast to his mug shot. Local 10

Following his arrest, the “defensive” teenager was captured sobbing in his mug shots taken over the weekend before showing no emotion during his initial court appearance.

The hearing is scheduled for the morning of February 26.
